Gardening friends,
Last Spring (2009) I planted 3 Golden Creeping Sedum from rooted starts in Zone 8b (South-Central California). They grew quite well during the Summer, expanding to about 3 times their original size. Now, however, as Winter approaches I've noticed that the previous year's growth has died back, leaving a large collection of new growth in the center of each plant. The new growth promises to be quite profuse, but I was under the (mis)impression that Creeping Sedum was an evergreen, and that the previous growth would not die back.
The question is: Is this dying back of old growth normal, or is something afoot in my soil?
Thanks to anyone/everyone who may be willing to pass on their experience or advice in this matter.
Golden Creeping Sedum
Hi Blackwill. Here is a bit of info for you on Sedum kamtschaticum. I was unable to find anything on die back, but wonder if it might be water related? Think because it is sprouting back out, it is happy where it is, but wonder if it may have gotten too dry? Can you post a picture of it? If you click on browse at the bottom of this post, you can upload a picture. Just remember to add at least a couple words to your reply.

I'm in 7b.... I have sedum kamtschaticum and it dies back in the winter, with just cool weather- even before the first freeze, but it does happily come back in the spring.
I have Dragon's blood sedum planted outside (zone 5a) and it comes back every year
Sedums, such a happy undemanding variable plant, grows everywhere in some form or another,
Where is the best place to get sedum? I want some, have very limited funds, and have been told stealing it from gardens in town is illegal. Is there an inexpensive source or can they be grown from seed?
Yes ma'am, you can grow sedums from seed. Here is a link to the marketplace here on Daves Garden. There are hundreds of sources listed and many of them are reliability rated.

Thanks Moon - I will be checking that out right away.
You are too welcome. Hope you find what you are looking for.
There's a bunch of sedums here:

...not as cheap as seed, but still, you get 10 plants for $6.
Thank you so much for the link! That is a pretty good deal in my opinion and instant gratifcation to boot. I hate waiting!
Thanks for the info on the Sedum. It is now the first week of January, 2010, and I have noticed that my Golden Creeping Sedum has survived the frost and promises to re-bound come Spring. However....I am considering moving it to my street-side raised bed, and that brings me to this question: Does anyone know if Sedum transplants well? I'd hate to lose it in "the move". But, after breaking my foot in mid-November, and not being able to get into my gardens, the bed where it is growing now is overgrown with weeds. I've got Daffodils, Freesia, Thyme, Bi-Color Butterfly Bush, The Sedum and Chinese Lanterns in that bed...somewhere amidst the grass and weeds...but I need to move them or pot them up so I can renovate the bed. Any advice, fellow Gardeners??
