The Hart-cure...

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

meet Sampson, our newest member of the family - the pics ain't great - I had to hold him and use one hand to take the pics

He has a few battle scars on his face from the kennel, but they'll heal

He's 5 months old, 90 lbs and a big baby - getting him up and down the stairs...not gonna happen

OMG I love him!! Mastiff? Great Dane?

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

English mastiff ^_^ He's whining downstairs in the kitchen, I need to finish some jobs and he refuses to go up the stairs, so he's locked in the kitchen - not liking it one bit

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Holey Moley!!!! 90lbs and only 5 months!!!!! Looks like a Mastiff.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Just so handsome!! Big dogs rule!!

Shenandoah Valley, VA

He's gorgeous, Bec! My gosh, what on earth will he weigh when he's not a baby?! Where did you all get him?

Looks like he and Bandit are getting along like gangbusters.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Really great looking pup, Bec!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Gosh, I just love puppy dog eyes. From the pictures, it looks like he has latched on to you already :-) What, you mean you can't haul 90 lbs up that flight of stairs, hee hee hee. Glad you went for the hart cure. Terri

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh Bec, He is just adorable. What a sweet giant. LOL about the stairs.

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

He is awesome, love the puppy eyes, big dogs are the best (even if they think they are lap dogs). Its kind of funny that he won't (can't?) do the stairs, I guess you will have to teach him how to go up, and then how to go down. Wish I could see that. Give him a big hug for me!

BTW here is a picture of the newest member of my family--Noah Joseph. He is a little bit smaller than your new additioin.

OMG look at all that hair. Cat what a beautiful baby.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Congratulations! Ahem, yes he's a 'tad' smaller than our boy - the first 18 hours have been interesting to say the least, but he's fitting in nicely - he's grasped the concept of "potty outside" - I take him out every 2 hrs, so only the one accident - he doesn't beg, he's very calm and adores my oldest cat JB - who was completely drenches from puppy kisses last nite - I ended up sleeping on the couch with him next to me, since he refuses to be in the kitchen by himself and refuses to go up the stairs. I was so tired I could have slept standing up! Right now he's sleeping peacefully next to me, he's had his breakfast, he did try to eat Bandit's who wasn't having none of that - made for an interesting feeding time - Thor is glaring at him from the top of the stairs - still hating this "thing" that came and interrupted his life so rudely...I left him in the backyard so I could take a shower this morning - didn't like that too much, but it was either howling in the kitchen or howling in the backyard - Daddy comes home this afternoon, we need to head to petstore, buy xx-large crate, food and kongs ^_^ Now daddy gets to work on the stairs, he's the big guy, he can try to lug a 90 lb baby ^_^

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Bec, When you are feeling better, you are going to have so much fun with him!

Catbird, Beeeauuuutiful baby!

Poor Thor.
I hope they all adjust!

Congrats, Catbird!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Wow, Catbird. Look at the size of his hands!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Serious injections of cuteness this AM, first from hart, now Sampson, then Noah..ahh.!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw one guy at the dogpark with an English Mastiff and an English bulldog- what a pair/ odd couple of dogs! I love the Mastiff face, just the right amount of nose IMHO (GS are too long and pointy, but don't tell on me,I'm learning to love it)
Catbird, Congratulations! my kids all had lots of hair at birth, never lost it all and it's a predictor of future wonderfulness, IMHO again.

Chadds Ford, PA(Zone 6b)

Bec, Hart may have had a bad experience with stairs before. Try sitting on the second or third step, talk to him, and tempt him with really good treats (meatballs are not too messy for that purpose). Are your steps carpeted? sometimes they slip on hardwood steps and scare themselves silly.
Good luck!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

We mastered the steps, all we needed was daddy and some persuasion

Samson (finally got the spelling right) looking cute - this was after I removed 5 pairs of shoes, somehow they taste better than the kong :)

Aww, SMOOCH

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

shoes and socks always taste better than toys. LOL

I taught my boy to bring those things to me to exchange for treats.

What a great face, Bec!

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Great pixs on the link, how about feeding that sweetheart so he doesn't have to try to eat his foot. I love him, he is so cute, would love to curl up with him. Give him a hug for me.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

The baby is expensive!!!

First toys, then we needed to order XX-large crate and mat, the first vet visit, next we needed to buy food, he's been on Iams and I refuse to use it so we went with Avoderm, not liking it too much, but I finally sprinkled cheese on it so he ate breakfast - I've never had a dog who didn't scarf down his food so this was a new one for me - next I ordered raised food bowls - since he's a grazer I need to keep the food away from Bandit, who WILL eat cardboard if it tastes good - and finally I ordered a 3.5 lbs bucket of Four-Flex - a special glucosamine blend for doggies - phew

It's still a battle with him and Thor - Thor finally emerged from my office cause he wants his mommy too much - right now he's half way up the stairs, growls every time Samson moves, but he's at least with us ^_^

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Refuse to use Iams--briefly, why? We used it till lastbag when hubby went cheaper to Purina and Ithought that was 'worse ' than Iams...
Ilove a cat that will stand up to a big dog! My Chester stood his ground against a Rottie. Go chester!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Iams not only contains too many fillers, but also has too many artificial additives (artificial vitamins are really bad for dogs) - they were also part of the recall a few years back - it contains corn which is not good for them & last but not least - http://www.iamscruelty.com/notTested.asp

I've always fed my pooches high quality foods, with Izzy we had to feed her grain free due to allergies - I've also done extensive research on the various foods and their content - If you want me to I'll send you a list of the different foods and manufacturers

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh boy, guess our pooch just got more expensive too. Heck, I should not complain about a few bucks a month on food. I don't want to put you to a lot of trouble. Any that are usually in Target or Walmart or these are in Petsmart? , or there is a huge 'natural petfood' store, Crunchies, near enough to me.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Petsmart & Petco carries some of the brands I'm about to send you - petfooddirect is excellent

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes, they do cost extra, but I think it is worth it - I used to feed "regular" catfood to my boys, when I changed to EVO I noticed a change in both of them - JB has always been a "hacker" - with EVO he hacks a lot less - I am going to try Avoderm on them as well - we were feeding Natural Balance, but it's grain-free and since Big Boy has no allergies I decided to switch back to not grain-free - one thing also with top foods is their poop is smaller and it's much better for their digestive systems, good preventative against bloat, gastro-intestinal etc Adding fruits, veggies, dairy etc is good for them as well

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Thank you, I got the list! The pets thank you too. We do have Petsmart, Petco, small independent pet stores, and Crunchies 'natural pet foods' store near enough.
When you're an organic gardener, it's not much of a leap to thinking in 'comparable' terms about your own/ pets diets too is it?

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Exactly - we try not to ingest stuff bad for us, why should our critters be any different - I found the Avoderm at Petco last nite

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Same goes for treats - some are really, really bad, contains artificial stuff, salt, sugars etc

I'm also looking at making/baking my own treats - lots of great recipes available

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I could maybe be persuaded there too, (make your own) when I cook chicken or turkey bones and have so much sort of dried out, gristly veiny junk that can be picked out that we won't eat but the critters would love, but I'm leery of giving too much real meat all at once, and must omit onion and garlic too of course.
Sheesh I go from not home cooking ENOUGH to saying I will make homemade scratch dog treats...
