Daily Pictures #261

Quoting:
These birds must have a finer textured feather because I can't seem to get the closer, clear, detail as I can with other birds

Yes, true. In a lot of languages, their name translates to 'silk tail', from the very fine silky texture of the feathers (including the scientific name Bombycilla, from Bombyx, a silk moth, plus cilla, tail).

Nice sharp photos of the Cactus Wren, Met.

Anchorage, AK(Zone 4a)

Met, I like you Cactus Wren pictures. They make me anxious to get started on my vacation, going desert bird watching the second and third weeks of December.

Clinton, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks. Grasmussen where are you going?

Sandusky, OH

Duc, your Waxwing photos are very good, and you nailed the TV, like Met said that's the best Ive seen also.
GP nice shots of the Painted Bunting even for a rainy day.
Met those are some super shots of the Cactus Wren! I like No.3 the best.
Well the only shot I got today was of the Red-breasted Nuthatch, lol so scroll up and there ya go.lol

Everyone have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Cramlington, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Thanks Burd but we don't have Thanksgiving outside of the US :)

PERTH, Australia

Wonderful photos, everyone.

Beautiful colours on the Bunting, GP.

duc, superb shots of the Turkey Vulture.

Al, I love the Cactus Wren. What a well named bird. Once again, your shots are crystal clear.

I've had very little to post of late, but I managed to get a shot of two Eurasian Coot chicks with a parent bird this morning.

Everyone in the U.S. then! Sorry knip the fumes from the pumpkin pie in the oven over took my thought process's for a bit. lol

Nice shot Margaret!

Cramlington, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Just kidding Burd :) Yes a pie-lover's dream is what Thanksgiving is! I lived in Maine for 10 years and do miss those desserts. We have our turkey dinner at Christmas in the UK. Hope everyone in the US has a great holiday weekend!

Norman, OK

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The wife dragged me up to Hemisphere's in OKC yesterday. It just happens that it is located just a few blocks from Lake Hefner, so we took a drive around the lake.

A male Northern Shoveler. Not a great pic, but a hard bird to get close enough to photograph.

Thanks for the great pics, all!

I saw my first Goldfinch of the season this morning! I hope to get some pics. They aren't on the feeders yet.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Thank you Resin! I feel better knowing more about the Waxwings feather texture.
GP, your Bunting is such a beautiful bird.
Met, your Wren is beautiful. I loved that fourth picture! Is that 5th one in a nest or is the bird just checking for bugs? That last one is great. The butterfly (poor baby) is almost the color of the bird. Great job.
Margaret, great photos of the Coot chicks.
Reddirt, that Mute Swan looks pretty in the colored grasses. Great photos of the ducks too.

Happy Thanksgiving to each of you!

Here's a Mourning Dove that was looking in the window at me.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

We got six inches of snow over night. I provided thanksgiving dinner to the local Magpies. Three cups of dog food disappeared in less than two hours.

Met, I'm going to the Salton Sea, CA. for a week, and the to Phoenix, AZ. for a week. My nephew is getting married in Phoenix on December 19th. The Salton Sea is a major bird wintering area. A friend counted over 100 species there, in a single day, last winter. I've been fantasizing about going there since hearing his stories.

It was a wet heavy snow, and frosted the trees in holiday splendor.

It's stating to look a lot like Christmas!

It would have been nice to have gotten a little sun shine, in the six hours, the sun is above the southern horizon. Not enough light for good photography. Notice the gray sky in the background.

Reddirt nice shots! Only seen the Northern Shoveler once all year and he too was too far out, but cant miss that bill. lol

Duc, I think I see a lil smile on your M. Dove.

Grasmussen, nice shots even for the low light, the Magpie in the snowy tree (no.2) would make a nice greeting card.

I took some shots today while visiting my brother, but I did not take the tripod, so none of them turned out.

GP its Thanksgiving lol Nice shot!

Marlton, NJ

Great shots everyone!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Gras, your Magpie is beautiful in that snow.
GP, it looks like you need more feeders there. Those squirrels sure gobble up the food fast.

Our Brewers Blackbirds are still monopolizing the nut feeder.

Here's another one.

I'm still downloading pictures, but we spent our Thanksgiving day out in our kayak on the "smooth as glass" lake. We saw a good amount of herons, egrets, white pelicans and coots.

The Double crested Cormorants sat in the tops of the trees just watching us paddle below them.

Here's another one. The sun wasn't up far enough for a real clear photo.

Kayaking on glass-smooth water-- a great way to spend time.

Wonderful shots duc! The Brewers Blackbird are so handsome and I always love seeing the Double-crested Cormorants!

Beautiful Bluebird Red!

Hope everyone who celebrates had a very nice Thanksgiving. Thanks for sharing all your great photos and experiences.
