need help with this Brighamia :)

martofte, Denmark(Zone 7b)

hi, this is my parents plant, i don't know how old it its, but its about 50 cm tall, the problem is the stem and the flowers.

is there anything i can do about the stem? or is it normal that its so thin and rangly (is that the right word? i dont know, english isn't my first language) my mother has always pulled off the leaves when they started to turn yellow, i suggested to her that she let them fall off on their own, because i had read that it makes the stem prettier on some other plants.

also the flower buds, they get about 5 mm long and then they wither, can any1 tell me how to make it flower?

Brighamia species live on sea cliffs of Kaua'i, Moloka'i, and Maui. They need a lot of sunlight.

Your plants also look badly nutrient deficient. Try giving them a high phosphorus & potassium fertilizer, with low nitrogen.

Don't pull leaves off the plant, as it is reabsorbing nutrients until it falls off.

themoonhowl: thanks for the links, even tough they didn't help me :)

metrosideros: until a few months ago it had been growing in little broken pot with barely any dirt in it, when i repottet it the leaves tripled in size and stayed green for much longer before turning yellow, so i dont think i have to fertilize it quite yet.

Jonas, so sorry the links were not of use to you. Metrosideros is very familiar with the plants of Hawai'i. You could direct specific care questions to him. I am sure he will be able to give you the info you need.

Jonas, send Metrosideros a d-mail. Just click on his name and it will take you to his user page. He can answer your questions.

Do not prune it! Fertilize it.
