Weigela help PLEASE

I was wondering if Weigelas should be pruned back so they dense up and if they should be pruned what time of year should it be done? Right now I have eight planted in a row, now about two years old and they are growing all spindly, I really want them to make more of a hedge appearance. Any help would be appreciated.
