Hi all !
A couple of month ago I started a fig tree from the one in my back yard by feeding a branch thru the bottom of a pot. As it turns out our house sold and I have to leave; but not before I take the future fig tree with me.
So, what I have done is the following: cut the branch that was thru the bottom of the pot and checked for root development; it was good (or so I think) there were some roots in there.
I know that if the tree is dormant you can just cut a stick, put it in the ground and wait for spring and that's it, your tree will start blooming.
In this case the tree is not dormant yet, it just started to turn colors and loosing very few leaves. So what I've done is trim the foliage of the little branch so my tree wont die trying to sustain those leaves.
My question is the following:
The little branch seems to have very little buds on it (which I have left). Do I keep the pot indoors or take it outside??
If I take it outside soon will be dormant and I don't know what will happen with those buds.
If I keep it indoors I will throw the plant out of wack thinking that the spring is coming back or something.
What to do, what to do????? Help please......
Thank you all for your help.
Willy
Starting a Fig tree from an established one.
Hi Willy. Best solution would be to keep it in the pot, outside in the sun. If you have a hard freeze coming, move the pot to a sheltered area...garage, carport, shed, to protect the roots from freezing. Don't worry about the buds....the tree knows what to do there....grin.
Thank you!!!!
It's outside in my balcony and it's under a roof, so I think it will be ok for a couple of months.
Here in Atlanta Ga we rarely get a hard freeze and those will only come in January and february.
It's important to me that this tree survives because my wife loves the fruit we get from it (or used to get). I figure it will be a couple of years before we can get some figs again.
Thank you again.
Willy.
We started a Brown Turkey Fig from our old house. The first year it graced us with two figs.....what a little trooper, the figs were almost as big as the cutting....grin.
You are so welcome , Willy. Your cutting should do fine there.
