"and......." I think you were going to add: if I don't have room I'll just send the extras along to Deb!!! isn't that your thought process?????? Deb

Nice analogy Lefty, regarding bulb sizes.

I have noticed in the Tiny Series of lilies that those bulbs split up and don't bulk up. The bulbs don't seem to get very big, instead they multiply quickly. The only exception to that in that series would be 'Tiny Todd', those seem to get a bit bigger before dividing/multiplying.

yup

The size of the bulbs makes it even more exciting!

Dallas, GA(Zone 7b)

Wow. Now I remember why I like to buy my lillies from Buggy!
I went ahead and ordered my 5 little dwarfs (sorry Deb...much as I appreciate your offer, I'll just try to find some room here somewhere). Am curious as to the bulb size these will be (considering they're little lillies).

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I dont think the plant size affects the bulb size

Hyannis, MA(Zone 7a)

Yes, the size of the bulb very much matters, dependent on the species. Bigger IS better!!! You see that clearly illustrated in daffodil and tulip bulbs...a small bulb results in a small or weak looking plant. Go to the Colorblends website and read what they say on the subject. They sell the best and biggest triple nosed daffodils around, plus big tulip bulbs which result in amazing flowers.

Thanks for the info.

Actually you may be correct, ge1836, but that's not what we were talking about:

Size of the bulb does influence the size and bloom of the ensuing plant.

But the size of the plant does not necessarily influence the size of the bulb. (For example, a large plant having a tough summer, in other words not doing well, would probably produce a smaller bulb that season, compared to the previous season's bulb from which it emerged.)

My latest order from BuggyCrazy . This is a Sauromatum Venosum supersize bulb. you can see the growth in the middle then the other is a Dracunculus Vulgaris medium bulb and you can see it has at least 3 pups on it as well as the bulb itself....Lisa also hand wrote me detailed culture suggestions...Yup, she's got my business....Deb

Depsi, They are beautiful... Welcome to the group of happy Lily growers! Once you have Lisas bulbs you are totally spoiled..

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

amen.
This was my first order on Pirls recomendation.
She is on my Fav's list

sandnsea2 - Colorblends does give a very good explanation of why bigger is better!
Thanks for mentioning it.

Pirl - You are most welcome :-)

Dallas, GA(Zone 7b)

My dwarf bulbs from Buggy arrived this week and I just put them in their pots. I should have taken pix but I was too eager to plant them to take the time.

They are huge. I guess I thought they'd be small - to match the small size of the plants (2--3') but I was wrong. One of them was 'a tad small' (quote from Lisa) so she threw in a beautiful Tramp as a bonus. Lovely hand-written note.

I am sooo excited!

Considering that I have hundreds of lilies, I've never seen lily bulbs the size that Buggy sends and I was extremely impressed. I'm also thrilled to know it's true that when it comes to lilies "size does matter" since I had been led to believe it wasn't true.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I hope mine have enough room for those multi blooms come June-July

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Jo, when it comes time to plant your Tramp, make sure you put her in 'close sniffing range'. Of all the orientals I grow, she has the most exquisite scent.

While Tramp was blooming, visitors kept asking "WHAT is that SMELL??" She now has a front-row seat. :)

Dallas, GA(Zone 7b)

Oh boy oh boy. yes, Moby. Tramp is on the deck right outside my kitchen boy. Oh... how exciting!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I just love June and July her when the lilies are blooming.
I must check out Tramp.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Me, too!

Check out the Classified Ads--go to her site now--read her statements, I think she's throwing in the towel...really hate that but there seem to be personal things (as she's mentioned in her statement) and business reasons as well which most of us have been made aware of. Really hoping this move is for the best for her.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's really sad that it's come to this.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh gosh, I just went to her website and read her statements. Her situation sounds just awful. I don't blame her for giving up. I couldn't possibly walk in her shoes.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I guess I don't see anything different from what she has up on the website now and what she has had up the past three or four years that she has had the vstore. Its her outlet for frustrations. She adds to or changes maybe a couple of times a year but if you haven't read through it in the past you wouldn't know this.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

Maybe I just don't remember bulk box sales of her lilies and any mention of a drunk abusive husband...must have overlooked that in the past. I do know that she has been frustrated with the farming politics in her area and vents that frequently...just hadn't seen the other stuff mentioned before. Sorry if I interpreted the information as more serious that it may be.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Its really sad news.I had hoped to be a regular

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

Thanks Pard--guess freezing temps would be a good reason to clean house. Thanks for the info. Don't know whether to order or not--

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

There are some updates here:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1065074/#new

Looks like she might be staying in the lily business. Look at the end of the thread.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I just went to her website and read it. I can understand her frustrations. And I understand her website is a place for her to vent about the government, and her neighbors.

I know Lisa is a member here. I hate to think about anyone, someone I have read posts from, someone that has a wonderful business, and tries to please people with her huge bulbs, being beaten by her husband. Lisa, please don't let that happen. Get yourself out of the situation any way you can. Please take care of yourself. No man is worth that.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm glad she leaves the door open for another season.
