Spider plant dying

Vandalia, IL

I have a common green spider plant that was given to me last month by my mother-in-law. I have only watered it once in the meantime so I do not think overwatering is an issue. Over the last couple of weeks the leaves have been turning brown and dying back. Their is only about 3 leaves on it that are still totally green. In trying to figure out what is wrong with it I asked her if she would have any ideas what the problem is. She then told me that it may have gotten frostbitten and that it was planted in regular dirt the basket probably weighs 20 lbs so the soil is very heavy. Should I repot it or would that stress the plant further? If so what kind of soil would be best? If I trim off the dying leaves I would basically be topping of the entire plant should I do that? I do have some soil it is Shultz moisture control if that would be appropriate. Any help is appriciated. I did cut off the babies so in the event this one dies all is not lost.

plant the babies in a lighter soil mix. They don't take all that long to root and grow babies of their own.

As far as the soil, just stick your finger in and see what it feels like. If it's like mud or you can squeeze water out by hand, change the soil or wrap the rootball in newspaper to help absorb moisture. If the soil is like a damp sponge, then leave it alone til it dries down an inch or 2 before you water. They are not frost hardy, so that may be the leaf trouble... It could also slow the plant down, as will the foliage loss. Water very carefully, and you may just support it back to health :).

Can you provide a picture of it?
