New Garden Projects #6

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

His ash will be toast if I find it in the wrong spot again!

In NYC and about to head to catch a train to New Haven where my car is parked. Trying to beat the storm out of here and back to Nantucket. Some one wanted snow, but this could be a messy one. Patti

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Hope you get back home before the snow. Good luck on your travels!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Patti, You must have passed very nearby. Too bad I didn't see this earlier, though I imagine you were in a hurry. From what I've heard, Nantucket is in for a doozy!

Thomaston, CT

Good weather to dream of a garden----

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Stay warm and safe Patti.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks, all, I got on the road from New Haven by 9:07 am and was in Hyannis by 12:30. The wind started a couple of hours ago and the snow just started a few minutes ago, so I got here with no trouble. Patti

Good news!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

WOOHOO!!! Back safe - home again.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I save all my wood ash for my compost and even save a little for enriching the soil when planting new trees and shrubs. I was taught it's supposed to inprove water retention and disease resistence, used with a little super phosphate to stimulate root development it should give a newbie a good start. Ric

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Glad you're home safe, Patti!

Thomaston, CT

Let us know how you weathered the blizzard, Patti!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Robindog, our electric was out from late last night until 6:00 tonight. We have a wood stove so we were fine and toasty. Heated up a pot of water for cups of tea. DH had filled some big pots, just in case. Town never lost power, but isolated outages all over the Island. Heavy snow, but not much stayed on the ground as it just blew away with all the wind. DH went into town to go shovel out the boat and said it was pretty icy. Good day to stay inside and read my first garden catalog from Bluestone. Only saw a couple of tempting things. Hope all is well for everyone on the eve of a favorite day. Winter Solstice. So Happy Solar New Year all. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

glad you weathered the storm there patti

Happy that you got home safely so y0u could read catalogs.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Proudly, I didn't spend a cent! Yet. I need to figure out my garden projects for 2010 first. I think I may be less ambitious this spring. More tweaking than big projects. But all could change in a moment. Patti

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Hope everyone is staying safe and warm during the storms.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

dahlianut, this little bit of fluff would be nothing for you. But nice of you to be concerned. Patti

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

It's big news here Patti. I just read on the Bird Forum that someone got 18" in one dump EEK! I hope that those trying to get home for Christmas make it.

Thomaston, CT

Happy you had the stove, Patti! We only had a little over 4", & DS, who lives in the icebox of CT only got 2"! I'm almost ready to order from Bluestone---I need some low growing geraniums to edge out the new garden strip.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Glad you got home safe and weathered the power outtage, Patti! Nothing like a wood stove in those situations. Ours in our kitchen in NH has saved us from lots of bad scenes in years past.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Happy Winter Solstice, everyone! Now the days will be getting longer.

Bill, you did a wonderful job with your stone table. I love it! That bonsai tree on it looks great, too. BTW, there is a daylily called Yabba Dabba Do, too. It's a spider type. It's medium purple with a large, chartreuse throat. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/18470/

Your path looks really nifty, Cousin Nut! I like! I do a lot of 'placing' myself. Sometimes some scattering.

Kathy, I think all of us here have several obsessions. I have several myself. BTW, what's a schist walkway? I could not have as many house plants as you have. I couldn't take care of that many, and I wouldn't want to. I already have too much outside to care for. We are heating out porch now, though, and I have a couple plants out there. There's a palm and a bird nest fern. Your pastels are really nice. I love the shot of the peony pastel with the blooming cactus in front of it on the shelf. What a great combo! Do you use oil pastels? Never tried them, but I've used the chalk kind. I bought both kinds for my niece for Christmas this year. She is getting more creative artistically, and I thought she might enjoy trying something different. Kathy, like you, I have not produced any art in a long time. I miss it, but I just don't have the time. Also, the creative juices for drawing are just not there these days. Too much going on with my gardens, etc. And then there's work. What I wouldn't give to win the lottery and not have to work anymore. Oh, Santa...........!!!!!!!

JoAnn, I'm an Aries, and we're not known for patience, either. I'm patient with some things, but not with others. I become impatient with things that don't come easily to me and if I'm not getting it right (i.e. construction type projects, like putting together furniture that comes unasembled, etc.). I don't always hang in there to master those things I'm not good at. Depends on how much I want to do it. I have ADD, too, so I have trouble staying focused on things that I'm not really wanting to do. People with ADD can become ultra focused on what they're really interested in, though. Oh, when it comes to drawing and painting, I've always worked best on things that were small and detailed, rather than big. I've always loved getting into the details.

Patti, I have to say that I'm impatient of others in an unfair way too, especially when it comes to my Dad. I hate when I lose my patience with him. He doesn't deserve that from me. My sister Dawn, the one in Alaska, has much more patience with him. I envy her that patience.

So, Victor, when are you having your first art gallery showing? I'm betting you'll sell out!

Harper and Louise, I have only one orchid that's doing well out of three I bought last year. No bloom stalks yet, but I'm hopeful. It has some nice new growth. One died and another is just hanging on and doesn't look too good. They need fertilizer, too. Poor things!

Oh, I've lost some pricey plants, too. Hate it when that happens. Makes my stomach turn.

Here I am laughing my ash off from all the ash jokes!

Gotta get to bed to get up for orchids and work but here is schist. http://images.google.com/images?q=schist&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=TUAwS-WrE9HTlAf27J2qBw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CCEQsAQwAw
I use chalk pastel but I used oil pastels in the past-started doing life classes with oil pastel at 15. The lottery sounds good but I never buy tickets....

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I only buy tickets occasionally. You never know....

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Bill, I just got around to reading the top of this thread, great job on the stone table. Have you ever used a tripod to walk stones? I built this bed 2 summers ago, from cut stone. My son and I recovered the stone from the local creek when the state rebuilt a bridge. We figured the larger ones (1/3 of which are buried) were around 400#. Ric

I have some larger ones to use when we finally get around to putting in a larger pond. I'm not sure I can walk these. LOL These we got when the neighbor cleaned out a hedge row. We estimate a couple of them to be 2 tons. Ric

nice wall ric - jealous of all that cut stone, makes the wall building much easier - most of what i have here is round stone. never did the tripod method will have to look it up in my building stone walls book that details different methods. i will be relocating some stone on the other side of a pond out back that i scouted before the snow, maybe it will help.

thx

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i think i would call in the heavy equipment to move those - wrap them in old rug or blankets so they do not scar on the move - i have several of those here as well although with all the garden beds i have built it would be tough to get anything bigger than a bobcat back there and that would not be big enough - there is one i am going to try and pull out with a come-along tied to a tree - i can move it with a bar, just can't get it out.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Luvly ric. wha whatcha gonna do when you've moved all the rocks around? Move to a new rockish place? Move them all back?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have decided to start storing rocks for a pond that may be built some time in the future - and i need roundish ones for that which there are plenty - of course some other rockish project may occur as well

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Like maybe a hobbithouse root cellar with a fabby door? I'm still cheering for that. ps where are your snakes hibernating? Hopefully not under the rocks you're moving?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

:) always careful about lefting rocks - have no idea where the water snakes go and i have thought about that as well.

not a lot of 6 ft. hobbits here.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Beautiful stone you have there, Ric. I'm very envious! I have stone envy! LOL! I would love to have some huge, lovely boulders like those.

Karen

Thomaston, CT

Love cut stonework----I only have fieldstones here as well, but they make a nice garden border.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

ric - very nice stone work! I also like the looks of the building above!!

Bill - we used to move many of our stones (including the ones at the cabin in the woods) during winter by using a flat sled to pull them easily over the snow. Hank thinks that's the best time to move stones around. We still have it around the farm somewhere, I think.

Dahlia - I like the idea of some hobbit doors placed around.....hmmmmm.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

wha, You have a lovely garden.
Ric did a wonderful job with the wall and he also put in a stone walkway that summer. If you would like to see more pic of the wall work I made a project thread that shows the before during and after. Here is a link to the old thread.

Here is a pic taken earlier in the summer you can see the walkway in this pic, also.

This was taken a little later in the summer when things had grown in a bit. The impatiens got huge and are really taking center stage but there are quite a few perennials and a couple of young azaleas in there. Holly

Very nice hollyann - the picture really gives some scale to the wall - i did not think it was that big before - very nice indeed! and i will check out that link

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i just got done checking out a few of your threads holly/ric - those are some great stones and certainly took a lot of sweat to get them home - my kinda guy! - and the walkway looks great - like the blue egg too!

here is a thread on a rock wall i built last year that ric might enjoy
