Hi Bill! How's the mushroom coming?
New Garden Projects #6
Has anyone tried using a piece of heavy monofilament line stapled over the entrance hole of their BB houses? I've seen from several sources that a BB will simply push it aside while other species of birds will avoid it. About March, I'll clean my boxes and try it.
Bill, Have you ever used a sledge to move large stone? Properly built you can move really large stone over frozen turf without damage. If necessary you can add lube, Water!!! I have used the 2 2x6 slide bar also to prevent marking, instead of using a pry bar I use a strap from a 3" cargo tie down wrapped around my forearms to lift and slide, this can be pretty effective up to about 450-600#. A good lube for the rails is veggie oil, you can water it in to prevent a lot of damage and if the rock gets a stain it quickly dries. I've moved a mobile home laterally 2-3' using two sheets of 1/4"x2'x8' pieces of steel, soap, and a garden tractor. How did Merlin make the stone's dance? Ric
Hi Harper - i have the mushroom cap done and still need to chip off some of the stem for a better fit - i tried to bring it inside last week when it was warmer and could not get it out of the ground so it will be delayed until spring - if i am able to chip the stem easily i think i will make it a flat top and chip out more of the cap - it sits on it now however if a tree rat were to jump up on it i think it would come .
Ric i have not tried that yet - when i move them with the pry bar i try to keep any markings on the underside of the stone - i am considering purchasing a nursery truck to make it easier to move my jm's in over-sized containers from the garage, if i do that i will get a larger one that can handle 1200 lbs which would also resolve my stone moving antic's :)
Hee hee... "tree rat". I'd love to see photos of the mushroom.
nice - where do the rattle snakes live?
Everywhere in AZ, but I didn't see one till the last week I was there. Glad I did all my walks before that. Maybe the potential place advertises that it comes with the rattlers. Are you moving dahl? Big change, no?
Such a different landscape. Will be interesting to garden. Don't know if I could do without lots of trees though. Check your shoes and bed for scorpions?
Huge change and huge learning curve boo! ngam I shall definitely appreciate my big trees here more after spending winters without them. wha there is no doubt that we will have multitudinous snakes in 3 of the places we are interested in snowbirding especially if we put in a water feature. Good thing I like rattle snakes and wearing cowboy boots ^_^
watched some B movie the other night called The Canyon or Canyon - guy got bit by two huge rattlers - one right on the face - he cut off the body with his knife and then removed the head from his cheek -
EWW!
:) - a very B movie about to honeymooners going on a mule tour of the grand canyon and the guide was an old scruffy alcoholic - he was the one who got bit - do not put this in you Que at netflix!
Bear Grylls peed into a snakeskin one time and then drank it!
Too much information Victor. Yuck.
He peed on the bottom of his x-country ski's to go up hill the other night - said he applied urine skins to his ski's - thought that was pretty funny
still have never seen him catch a fish
That s funny! He caught a huge fish the other night on the new one. He dove into the water with a spear and got it. He ate the eyeballs for water.
i won't believe until i see it:)
yummy!
I could've done without seeing that. Eeeeeew.
I was watching Bear do all that too! At least they spared you from hearing about what he did to that reindeer!! Ugh, I was a little horrified with that scene.
now there you go meredith, everyone will want to know how he gutted and took a bite of the rare heart - jeez :)
I did not watch the video. I do not watch this program. From the sound of the comments however, I think would be cheering for the animals.
Ahh but it was even better when he slit it's throat and let the blood pour into his mouth - then stuck his hands inside the belly to warm them up! I have to admit I really like that show though. He is one crazy man and he does all of these crazy things with so much enthusiasm and usually a big smile! I do find myself yelling eeww and covering my eyes alot though! : )
Sounds like a psychopath to me. He is doing all this killing for what purpose exactly?
It is a survival show. They drop him off in places where people die from being stranded and shows you how he would survive. He's killing the animals for food in a survival situation. He usually has no weapons and he make straps or in the example with the Caraboo he chased the thing down on foot and caught it by it's antlers. He has quite the set that guy!
The one where he ate the eyeballs of the fish was like watching The Castaway.
Oh I got that it is a reality show, but it is not for survival if he chooses to go there, it is for money.
Yes I agree. But I think it is a pretty interesting show and "the whole" gross eating parts, only make up a total of 5 minutes of the show usually. Most often he is eating insects, plants, rattlers or other snakes. It's more interesting to see all the other crazy stuff he does. Like making a grapple on an old rope and then using it to climb across rock faces from 60 ft up in the air. Or using tree branches to jump jump down 30 ft high rock faces. One show he fell in a frozen lake and showed you how to get out. Hopefully I am never faced with any of the situations he shows, but for more adventerous outdoors people, the information may come in useful. Now if I ever find myself starnded in the tundra I know how to hunt down a Caraboo for dinner! Lol JK
It's to TEACH survival. It's not a dumb reality show like Survivor.
I think you'd have to watch it to see exactly what it is like. If you go on Victor's link there are lots of clips from the show.
Here's a good one of the show I was trying to describe. http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/man-vs-wild-oops-moments/

I think anyone that is interested in outdoor activities like hiking and skiing etc. in remote areas should be required to take a class in wilderness survival. Same with long distance sailing, rock climbing. This is knowledge that was once known by everyone but has been lost to the general public. Just from the description of his enthusiasm of killing things seemed a little much and more for shock value and ratings, as much as actual teaching. That is my objection.
I have never seen him thrilled or enthused to kill anything.
pat you should watch the show before judging - it is very good
I find Survivorman more realistic, but he's no longer doing it. Bear is very entertaining and is an interesting guy. I've learned quite a few things from the show.
Dream home this year is in NM.

Bear Grylls. How do you pronounce his last name? Is that his given name?
grillis is how you pronounce his last name
'Grills'.
