Garden Quotes

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

I found a few quotations in a book - about gardening. Let me share them with you.

The best place to seek God is in a garden.
You can dig for Him there.
-- Bernard Shaw, Adventures of the Black Girl

Garden - the Purest of Human Pleasure
God Almighty first planted a garden: and, indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures; it is the greatest refreshment to the spirits of man; without which buildings and palaces are but gross handiworks; and a man shall ever see that, when ages grow to civility and elegancy, men come to build stately, sooner than to garden finely; as if gardening were the greater perfection.
--Francis Bacon, Essays: Of Gardens

Gardening - a Favourite Employ
As gardening has been the inclination of kings and the choice of philosophers, so it has been the common favourite of public and private men: a pleasure of the greatest, and the care of the meanest; and, indeed, an employment and a possession for which no man is too high nor too low.
-- Sir W. Temple

The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,
One is nearer God's Heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.
--- Dorothy F.Gurney, God's Garden

(I've displayed the first one in my garden)

Dinu, thanks for sharing. Maybe Dave can use them in his daily newsletter?????

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Dinu, here's another, I can't credit the author, but it works very well for my life :

"To live a full life, you must write a book, raise a child and plant a tree."

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

For that matter Kathleen, it works well for anybody's life, provided they are literate and human!

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

*grin* There is something about gardening and raising children that makes us human and humane, if we do it with love, and anyone who can read the seasons has a literacy that can't be taught in school.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Beautiful! Beautiful! Thanks for sharing, Dinu and Kathleen.

I've got a few:
"I consider everything hardy until I've killed it myself."
"You're not stretching yourself as a gardener if you're not killing a few plants."
and...
"The world laughs in flowers." ~ Emerson?

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Hey Wingnut, did you used to chat (how's that for a confused phrase?) on Garden.com?

Boy, have I proven a lot of plants not hardy in the house!

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, gosh, Kathleen. I used to have a memory like an elephant and a butt to match, now I just have the butt, so I don't know for sure. I've chatted on a few places, mostly message boards and forums ~ those chat rooms are too new-fangled and fast for me. ;-) Could have been, maybe yes, but maybe no, not. (How's THAT for a cornfused phrase? LOL!)

Where was the other Wingnut from? What were they (me?) into? Veggies, heirlooms, flowers, etc.? Did they live on a ranch like me? If you can remember anything they said or anything about them, let me know. It just might be me!

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Texas, building a new house, veggies, heirloom flowers. I 'used' to be Grandmakat, well, I'm still am but only to two munchkins that named me that awhile back.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

That sounds like me! Except I am remodeling a barn and turning it into a house (STILL at it ~ I don't think we'll EVER get it done!). I think I remember a "Grandmakat", too! Great to see you again, Kathleen!

Here's one of my favorite quotes..
Larkie

"If you have 2 loaves of bread
Sell one and buy flowers...
For although bread nourishes the body,
Flower's nourish the soul."
