OK! That gives me 6! It's my only bright spot in this whole nasty, windy, rainy day. This computer has been my salvation for the last 3 days while we have been stranded down here at the Outter Banks, NC. If any of you do much traveling, it's worth the investment to get a wireless card. I'll never travel without one again. It was also a little added security when we lost power in the middle of the night during a bad part of this storm. It kept us in touch with what was going on.
Pat so glad that you survied your trip to NC! You and hubby will have to come back when there isn't any storms lurking about.
Oh no Pat!!!! Thats where I want to go!!!! I hope the weather lets up for you!!! Where are you? Have you been to Duck???
We are in Frisco. We have been here since Wednesday and haven't been able to move because of this storm. At this point, every part of the Outter Banks is pretty much under water. We had to move to higher ground this morning when the water came up over the bulkhead to within inches of our motor home. I posted everything on the RR thread because I've been checking in with Melanie. It's got to end soon. How long can one storm last?
Keep us posted, and I hope you get to enjoy your trip soon!!!
How bout a Bonus for avpat??? Maybe she will have it, and the sun will shine again at the Outer Banks!!
#62 Super Orange
Have a great night all!!
I appreciate the thought. I wish I had it so the sun would shine again. I hope it shines soon. So many people down here need it so badly. At least I'm only a visitor and I get to go home when this is over. I don't have to deal with the aftermath of this storm. It's just such a mess and there's so much damage.
Pat, the Outer Banks got hit hard by this one, that's for sure. The sun is supposed to shine late today, but would you believe that it's stil rainning here, winds still blowing. I'm just so glad that you and hubby are OK.
We're just fine. Thank goodness we get along well. This is more togetherness than a lot of people could stand. We were looking forward to 5 days of exploring the Outter Banks, not 5 days trapped inside the motor home by the weather. If only the wind would stop, then maybe the water would start to recede. This morning the water is up even more than it was yesterday. If it doesn't stop soon, we won't make it out of here tomorrow. That means I won't be back in the classroom on Monday morning. If that's the worse thing that happens, I have nothing to complain about.
meag848 I did not realize you were in those storms as well!! Sunny thoughts heading your way too!!!!
avpat, my husband and I would do ok as long as he had his dvd's and I had my laptop!! LOL Otherwise, one would be in the rain!!!
I hope the weather lets up so you can drive out!
I have my laptop and my husband has his TV. A couple of days before we left home I bought some yarn. Thinking that if I had a little down time, I'd start crocheting a nice warm afghan for the motor home. Well, you would be surprised to see how much of that afghan is already done.
They have now declared a state of emergency for the entire Outer Banks. There is no way of knowing when the only road out of here will reopen. We are lucky because the motor home is self-contained. If the electric goes out, we start the generator or operate on LP gas. So far we have only lost electric once. Some areas have been out of service for a couple of days.
There is one other couple here near us with a big fifth wheel camper. Otherwise there is nobody around. It's kind of neat and a little eerie too, especially at night. At least were we able to move to higher ground and feel better about the water rising around us.
The sun did shine this morning for about 10 minutes before the clouds and rain moved back in. Hopefully it will shine again very soon.
Pat, I hope that you and your hubby can take a few days off because your gonna be there awhile. 12 is underwater and then when the water finally goes down they have to clean up the debris before they will open it.
Here it is still misty rain and windy, but not as much as it was. All the rivers should crest today. It has been years since I've seen the Tar River flood. It's 6ft. above flood stage now. But the good news is that the sun is suppose to shine this afternoon!!
Maybe the next time you come to Carolina the weather will be nice. You should take the tour of OuterBanks. Black Beards descendants are still living there. I love to visit Kitty Hawk.
You two stay safe!
Melanie
Yes Laura, we were in the path also but there is a big difference. I'm at home and Pat is in a motorhome. LOL!! After seeing the beach houses that were washed into the ocean, I was really worried that Pat's motorhome would be turned into a house boat!!LOL!!
Ok floaters, and non floaters alike!! Here is today's call:
#20 Cherokee Trail
Good Luck all!!
I have Cherokee Trail!
Well, I'm getting at least one extra day off from school. The road leaving the Outer Banks is still closed and they still don't know when it will reopen. So I got on the phone and arranged for a substitute teacher to come in on Monday.
Here is a picture of what it looked like through the windshield of our motor home the morning the water came over the bulkhead and we had to move to higher ground.
oh my pat, please be really careful, thats just auful. I hope this clears up real quick so you can get out of there, thats scary.
bonnie
WOW! Yes, please be careful. My DH is finally back to work and guess where he is of all places...in between Melanie and Pat!!!! I have been a nervous wreck hoping he would make it to the plant and back from the hotel he is staying at. He is about 40 min. from Greenville (?). He was also saying how bad the coast got torn up. Take your time going home, Pat!
Connie
Connie, I'm sure that he is fine. Today the sun is shinning! So it's cleanup time.
Hi Connie,
I'm sure he will be just fine. The water is starting to recede. The problem down here in the Outer Banks is that Route 12 buckled so they are not opening it to traffic. However, we are on our way home. They started an emergency ferry service to evacuate people from the Hatteras Island area. As I type, we are pulling away from the dock. This ferry goes to Okracoke (sp?) Island. Then we take another ferry to the mainland. We sat in line for an hour and a half for this ferry. The next ferry will be a little more of a problem. It leaves at 2:00 and they already have way more cars waiting to get on it than they have room for. It's the last scheduled ferry for the day. They may schedule another ferry for 8:00 tonight but we may not be able to get on that one either. We may have to sit in the parking lot over night. That's not a big deal since we are in a motor home.
Don't worry, things are definitely getting better down here.
Thank you both for the encouragement. I just got off of the phone with him and he says it is pretty well over with and it is supposed to be in the 70's there today. He finally fessed up and told me he hit a deer on the way to the plant. He is okay thank goodness and then I asked about the car. He says he really doesn't see damage. Wonder what that means LOL! As long as he is okay and has transportation, I am okay. Wow, what a vacation, Pat! You will have a lot to share with the kids when you go back to school. At least you are on your way :)
avpat and meag848, hope you are finally drying out a little. I know the storm was a fierce one. We drove thru North Carolina on I-95 on our way home. We left NJ Thursday morn and had heavy rain all the way to the middle of SC.
Hope everyone else in that surounding area is OK.
We're still sitting in line for the ferry. What a looooooooong day! It looks like we might make the 8:00 ferry. Keep your fingers crossed. I just really need to get home. We should be home late tomorrow.
thank God. I hope everything else goes well for you & you just get home safe.(:)
mrsbonnie
You won't believe it! To add insult to injury, we are sitting on the shoulder of Rt 1 in Delaware. We just had a blowout. It sounded like a bomb going off. Thank goodness we bought insurance for that kind of thing before we left home. The truck will be here in about an hour with a new tire.
Gees, I feel like we're living out the really bad script of a Chevy Chase vacation movie. I just want to go home.
