Great Pumpkins

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

That sounds great!!!
they can earn their badges like that.
Great Idea.
Just think, SW, you could aim it out in the pastures and the livestock can clean up the
Pumpkin mess, couldn't they? After the partys over.

Badges? They don't need no stinking BADGES!!!

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Why not? I don't know anything about boy scouts.
Why don't they? they got enough, already?
I didn't mean any harm.
RRM

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

LOL....RRM, pigeon wasn't insulting you. "We don't need no stinking badges" is a phrase from the movie 'Blazing Saddles'. We use it often around here.....

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

OH! knock me down with a chicken feather!!! I just knew I didn't mean any harm. I don't like fusses AT all.
I never watched "Blazing Saddles" Maybe you better knock me down with a pillow, it has more feathers. ^_^
I will apologize for being so silly. Had a nephew used to tell me "it's a joke, Aunt Tootie." It is bad when
I can't recognize a joke. I'm so silly. Thanks for putting up and explaining . You are all Great.

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

Sorry for the confusion, RRM---I have an "unconventional" sense of humor. Didn't mean to upset you!
I used to have a boss I dearly loved who never got any of my silliness. But he put up with me anyway....

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

It is o.k. I love you all.
I feel so bad, but your letter makes me feel much better.
I don't want to hurt anyone.
Thank you, my day will be better now.
God bless you all.

Wow---I just found that there's a whole website devoted to "Stinking Badges", which was originally a line (misquoted in later films) from "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and has gone on to have a full life of its own!

All rightee then. no stinkin nuttin HUH???
^_^
See the things , we find out. Amazing.
RRM
You all great!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Well, I'm laughing so hard my ribs hurt.
I'd bring the catapult idea up not only to the local scouts, but also to the physics dept. at the high school and JC. I just want to have some fun!
Badges. I've been disappointed ever since the BSofA dropped the bee keeping badge. Sigh!
I remember the line from the movie, and I agree, Badges, we don't need no stinking badges!
Okay, please remember my Dad was a self-taught electronics engineer. I was taught that if you can follow instructions there ain't nothing you can't do (of course the instructions have to be understandable). Also, remember that as a Marine Corps brat, we were taught to improvise, who needs the GSofA when you are training with the Marines?
If it is any consolation, sometimes it takes weeks for me to get the joke. Sometimes I get it right away. I personally think it's just a little quirk, that will get better eventually.
May the Great Pumpkin Live on!

Hope that's right.

Hmmmm---the "landing area" could become the start of the following year's compost pile!

Which reminds me of another story. My FIL lived in Palos Verdes, which is a big hill that overlooks the ocean on one side, and LA basin on the other. He lived on the "city" side. There was a fairly deep canyon on either side of the lot where the house sat. Every morning he was home (he was a pilot) he'd eat half a grapefruit and then "frisbee" the rind out into the canyon. I always figured that after 30 years of that, the soil down there was probably pretty good!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

I have a dark sense of humor and quite often I wonder if people understand it at all....lol....The phrases we use at our house would have no meaning to others and there are times they probably think we're nuts. While stopped at one of our favorite pizza places out of town, there was a guy with his dog in the back of the truck..the dog is of course barking as the guy is walking away and he turns to the dog and says "Stop barking! Go lay down!" That and the look on the dog's face was just really funny and we've adopted it. Around our place that has become the response to someone complaining. I used it on my son's friend and I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm nuts.....

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

There's no question in our house about being nuts...it's just an occupational hazard of belonging to this family. Our son was raised on lines from Monty Python, Firesign Theatre and several other comedy groups & silly movies. When he went to college, someone was watching a Monty Python Flying Circus rerun on TV and he called to ask us about it. DH taped the albums & sent them to him, and he finally got to hear the dialog in context. He and his current GF found they have this in common from their childhoods. Gives me hope for their relationship. We used to sing to him all the time, too. He learned to just roll his eyes and say nothing.....

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm pretty sure it's inherited. My ES was really into Weird Al, so I got him all the albums, okay cassettes or cds. A few years ago, we had the opportunity to see Weird Al in concert. Much to my surprise and my kids embarassment, I knew the words to all the songs, and I sung along. It was great fun.
If you can even get my ES to stop being shy, he does a great parody of Amish Paradise. He has a sly sense of humor.
I'm pretty sure we all got it from my Dad. Sibs have it, but Mom has her own bizarre sense of humor, so maybe we got some from her too!
My ES does try to make me laugh and keep me posted on current events. He made me read the books,
"The Zombie Survival Guide", and "The Zombie Wars". He is refusing to read "Friday" by Heinlein, and expects me to read another one of his books, when he hasn't kept up his end of the deal. Have his book hostage. Ha Ha Ha!
DH is getting interested in the Pumpkin Launching thing. I'll have to do some research, and send out invites, and make sure to take plenty of photos! LOL!
wcgypsy, it makes sense to me. We use the song "I'm going out to eat worms", for the same purpose. Another one I always hate hearing is when parents tell their kids to "Shut Up!" I tell mine to "Turn Down the Volume!". That clues them in without being disrespectful to anyone in public or private. I like yours though, stop barking and go lay down!
I have just the place to put a compost pile. Heh, heh, heh! Wink! Wink!
Such wonderful ideas!
Thanks y'all!
Oh, and imapigeon, that's what I like best about my ES's GF. She makes him laugh. Priceless!

DS and his roommate and I were just talking about Wierd Al the other day....then DH (who was bbq'ing birds at the time) quoted 'Chicken Man' ("He's everywhere, he's everywhere!"---another line from the boy's & my childhood.) When I was a kid in Denver, I could get the big Chicago radio stations on my Zenith transistor radio, which I hid under my pillow and listened to with an earphone till I fell asleep.

When we came home, DH did some research and found there's a website where all the Chicken Man radio episodes can be purchased, just in case you're suffering from Chicken Man Nostalgia...LOL!

PS: I love that you're considering the pumpkin catapault idea!

Consider yourself invited to the Great Pumpkin Bash (I really couldn't resist the pun). (If you can't make it down, I'll take lots of photos!)
DH is looking for really big rubber bands. I offered him my exercise bands, LOL, but ES says they have found Surgical tubing better.
Don't recall the Chicken Man, but do recall listening to Wolfman Jack, and our favorite Dr. Demento. Not sure if they were CA phenomenons or not. Think Wolfman Jack was pretty well known, but not sure about Dr. Demento.
Does anyone else remember the Harvard Lampoon? They put out an album of spoof songs, that I'd sure like to get a copy of.

Be sure and post the date for the Pumpkin Bash - we will definitely attend!

DH and I use British terms that confuse the heck out of people sometimes. Neither of us like most comedy acts/shows - we prefer our humor dry and wry!

Rita Coolidge lives in Fallbrook too. One of my Wolf friends was in a photo shoot with her. They didn't want the owner though. LOL. BIg ole' Indian Warrior.
My son and I didn't know that Weird Al lives in Fallbrook. Learn something new . . .
Awesome link, who'd have thunk there'd be so many categories? Is there video someplace, I'd like to see that. Oh boy I found one and a Ballad too!

Yes, Rita has lived here a long time (Walela being on my list of my favorites..'I turn my radio on, turn my radio on'). Tony Hawk (skateboarder extraordinaire) lives here, T. Jefferson Parker (author), others of interest....and yes, Tori Spelling for awhile with her weird Bed and Breakfast thing....hmm, others I can't think of at the moment.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Well Fallbrook is a lovely place with a great climate. Pity about all the recent wildfires out that way in the last few years.
Have you heard Walela sing Amazing Grace? Awesome. It's obvious we share similar tastes in music. I am also fond of Buffy St. Marie's old stuff, and an incredibly talented woman by the name of Joanne Shannendoah. Does she have a great voice? Well I think so. I love to hear her sing and some of her songs are the ones I sing to the critters. She sings a lot of them in her native tongue. Truly awesome. I'll have to see if she has anything out on YouTube. I just discovered YouTube. : - )
Been voting in the photo contest. Very time consuming, but I'm discovering a lot of blue flowers! LOL!
I took a walk with Spirit the other day and I found this out by the pumpkin patch.

Yes,Amazing Grace is wonderful...their harmony divine, but I LOVE 'Turn My Radio On'. It's the one I find myself singing all of the time. I liked Buffy except for a bit too much vibrato in her voice...now, if we want to talk Joan Baez, you've got my attention...lol

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

You know I've been meaning to add some of Joan's songs to my ipod. Any suggestions, wc?
Got to run, my friend is here to trim my hair. I'll have her take photos of the finished job. She's just making me look well groomed instead of my normal nature girl thing. We just took before photos. LOL!

If you happen to like Folk in general, try Kate Wolf (Folk music particularly relating to California, especially Northern)

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I like just about everything (with the exception of some alternative rock after our recent trip to OK), but have to admit to liking to hear and understand the lyrics.
Lately I like listening to Sirius Satellite Radio. They have a station called the Coffee House which features up and coming artists as well as some old favorites. It's all acoustical singer/songwriter music. I like that. Just like I liked Buffy's unique voice. I was glad she didn't sound too polished, more like family folk, if you know what I mean. Folk music is wonderful. I love stories to music! : - )
I'll check out those songs, by Joan Baez. Thanks for the suggestions, wc.
I'll check out Kate Wolf too.
I really like Jack Johnson and Zach Gill for the So. Cal surfer music, these days.
Not as familiar with the No. Cal folk music as I used to be. Kids happen and then you're singing rubber duckie you're the one, to your kid and you loose track.
The good news is that "Puff the Magic Dragon" is popular again. Ah some of the old magic lives on.

Many years ago on "The Smothers Brothers" TV show, there was an appearance by Mary Travers, Joni Mitchell and Cass Elliot together singing "Any Day Now". It was extremely beautifully done and left a very lasting impression on me. Several years ago I decided to see if I could track down whether or not there was a recording of that program available anywhere...after a few false starts I reached Peter Yarrow and after telling him how much it had meant to me he said that he thought he did have a recording of that particular song and that Mary was battling leukemia at the present time. A couple of weeks after that I received a package from him with a tape recording inside of the song and I was so thrilled....and then devastated to find that someone had done some kind of remix to the original and added some horrible upbeat rhythm to it. I didn't have the heart to mention it to him, but Mary is gone and Cass is gone,so I'm not ever going to hear it again...sigh. Puff the Magic Dragon I can live without, however...lol...Mary did a beautiful (heartbreaking, really, to me) number not too many years ago
about Matthew Shephard's death in Wyoming titled "Jesus Is On the Wire". Seems I never have time to listen to music anymore unless I'm on the road, but now think I'll have to go dig out some stuff I'd like to listen to......

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

wc, I remember that episode of the Smother's Brother's. I was enthralled. It's a shame they didn't save that song. I always loved Cass Elliot, she had such a beauty about her, another loss for us all.
Puff has a special meaning for me. Silly, but I was in kindergarten and our teacher would play that song during nap time. I loved the story even though it has a sad ending. I was guaranteed to stay still while it played otherwise I was always moving.
I don't remember "Jesus on the Wire". Will have to check it out.
I usually find new songs while driving down the road, and often garden with my ipod on. Lots of times I just want to hear the silence.
See what I mean about kids? Personally, I don't care if I ever hear that rubber ducky song again. LOL!
Take the time to listen to some music. Even if it's just the wind chimes. : - )
Music makes the heart glad.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Amazing...you and I are probably the only two people I know of who are aware of that particular Smothers' Brothers show. The passing of time does hold sadness...their are many people that I miss, but every genreation feels that...

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

If I had a memory, I would probably know that episode, since I watched the brothers on TV all the time and even saw them at a club somewhere. I like a little bit of a lot of music, but whatever it is has to have a melody and at least be "hummable!" Just heard a snippet of Edith Piaf on a show DH is watching, and I like that, too, even though I can't understand what she's singing (French) - the passion is there.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Me too...my tastes are very eclectic. I'm currently hooked on the opening number from the movie 'The Inside Man'. I've started the DVD over and over just to listen to it...guess I may have to go see about the soundtrack. Chaiyya Chaiyya remix from the Hindi movie Dil Se, 'Thaiyya Thaiyya Bollywood Joint'.

Freedom, CA(Zone 9b)

I loved the Smothers Brothers Show!
Did you know they used to live here in Santa Cruz County? I don't know if they still do. My mind just went blank on the name of the dark haired brother. I remember the blond one is Tommy. Was it Dick? Anyway, ever year, he used to have some kind of big celebration and he'd order 250 mums from Antonelli Brothers. One year, I was going throught the sales yard to get a cup of coffee and he stopped me to ask me if I would count the mums for him to make certain they were all there. I didn't recogonize him and told him that I was in wholesale and he'd have to find a retail clerk to help him!! I was in my twenties, is that a good excuse? It wasn't until I walked away to get my coffee, that someone pulled me aside to enlighten me as to whom I had just given the cold shoulder! I was mortified! Jerry Van Dyke was in there once too, but I recognized him immediately and was very nice to him :-)

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Yeah...I wish the Smothers' Brothers show would become available again. When I was trying to track down that one number I contacted them and they (Dick, I believe it was) said they couldn't do it, they didn't have rights to the recordings. There are some old classics that should be released.....

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Yep, I'll ask my son, he's been able to find episodes of the old series Dark Shadows, maybe he can find out if the Smother's Brothers are out there somewhere.
I loved all of their ensemble and cast of characters. I never missed it when it was on. Not that I got to choose what we watched, but it was one of the few shows we all liked.
Back On Topic:
On Thanksgiving at 8:00 pm on the Science Channel, they will have a whole show devoted to our favorite new sport, PUNKIN CHUNKIN'. At least that is what the commercial said. I don't know if they mean Eastern or Pacific time. Usually that would be 5 pm, our time (Pacific).
I am enjoying the chat, and the memories too.

Dark Shadows, I loved Dark Shadows,
haven't heard that one in years.
RRM

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I loved that show. I never missed it, and would walk home rather than take the bus. I'd walk the three miles home at a brisk pace to be there on time every day that show was on. I could walk the three miles in 45 minutes back then. Of course I took a few short cuts that I'd be wary of these days. We did live in a more innocent time, then. Come to think of it, I was pretty good at hopping fences back then too.
The whole thing with ES is that I kept hearing the theme song to the Series, it was really his cell phone ring tone. He actually found a website with the music from the show, just to prove me wrong. He changed the ring tone, because it was eerily similar to the theme song. I made him work though! LOL!
Then he goes and tells me that they did a remake of the series. He showed me a clip. I might have him rent the series so I can check them out. I guess he was going to rent, or did rent but watched it online an episode or two of the original series.
Funny how they have remade everything except Gilligan's Island. That was a totally silly show, but it was a lot of fun on a lot of levels. Watching the episodes as a kid and again as an adult, and you see the shows in a whole new way.
Wouldn't it be great if one of the TV stations ran Gilligan's Island all day long on Turkey Day. We're getting to the point where even my kids can name that Twilight Zone Episode. There are always the football games too.
Was thinking of actually making a pumpkin pie from scratch, then I came to my senses. LOL! Or not?
