Does anyone else love snakeplants?

I just brought these home. I have four variteties now. 2 not shown is your traditional snake plants you find in stores and greenhouses.

Sansevieria is not one of my favorite plants but I've somehow acquired a few over the years. Mine are all the common type. These look pretty ratty because the pots have been sitting behind the shed in a weedy area for a very long time. I just dragged them out when mowing and doing yard work yesterday because I want to clear the area behind the shed. I have a couple of the little squatty birds nest sans too.

you can just pack those up and send them to my house plantlady! LOL I don't have that kind!

i love them!!! especially the tall kinds...they are so indestructible and make a great architectural statement. they are actually the only houseplants i have...oh and a zz plant too.

Sure. Love them. Cylindrica, which you have, is a favorite. There are lots of shapes and sizes and leaf colors.

I've been trying to find a home for the Sansevieria trifasciata I got. I had given it to a friend of mine but she was so scared that the plant would kill her cats even though I told her it would only give them a belly ache or a numb tongue. I guess I can't blame her....

It's not in very good condition but I know if I could get it a good home it would perk up. Unfortunately, I can't send it through the mail, it's much too big. If anyone is interested in picking it up please let me know. It's sitting outside right now because I don't have space for it and it's starting to get cold.

I love snake plants, I have hhmm 3 or 4 different types......

I actually found a home for it this afternoon. Next time I get something that needs a home, I'll come to you first trinawitch! I just didn't have the money to send something so heavy. :(

cool...Happy Dance...I will probably be sending it out monday or tuesday, By priority mail. And I understand about money...Want a teenager? I have 5 I'm sure I can spare one...LOL I'm just glad you found it a home!

Lol... you must have your hands busy with 5 teenagers. I was an only child who eventually had one step sister. I kinda wish I had more brothers and sisters but it wouldn't have been good circumstances.

ahh there all right most of the time, its the chupacabra (chihuahua 4 mo) and the gremlin (a little black kitty about 2 mo) that keep me busy! They get into everything way worse than the kids everdid!

Trinawitch: if i get some babies off of these. I will send you some. I have 3 teenagers and one preteen so I know the feeling. lol.

I can relate to that.. My 14 yr old son fits that description.... and I have two 11 yr olds and an 8 yr old.. ALL BOYS!!! I will hang the one that told me having your children 3 yrs apart was the perfect age difference.. because just as soon as I take a breath because my 14 yr old is getting "past" something... the next two start it!!!! -- Its just not fair... Will I ever get a break? I'm guessing that is many years away yet....

Oh about the Snakeplants... I thought I did not like them...but I recently received some in a trade. I put them in my bathroom and have decided that I like them alot...much to my surprise!!

daisy once you give birth to them you NEVER get a break from them, ever, ever, ever!
and the watching thier brains fall out just hit the last one (girl) yesterday. I just keep reminding myself I now have a countdown, she's 12 so 6 more years and they will all be old enough to lock the door and move and not tell them where I went! LOL

I love 'em but they can certainly drive you insane... and my husband wants to know why I'm crazy!!! Can you believe it? ; ) He is obviously not with them as much as I am... lol

hubby might see ours for an hour a day unless it's the problem child and he takes him to the garage and makes him work, because I refuse to deal with the little deliquent anymore (his kid)

Hello, ladies .... er, umm .... about snake plants? Has anyone ever propagated one by cutting it into one-inch pieces and putting the bottom edge upright in a pot of soil?

(I have. To have successfully increased a snake plant this way is a rite of passage as a green-thumber, I believe.)

But it takes patience! Lots of patience!

I cut them into 4" sections, so I guess I'm a rookie. I think I remember something about the variegated edge varieties will not keep the variegated edge with segments. With them I thought you had to do division to keep the edge. I have to go ponder this now. Maybe I dreamed it.... sigh...

No 3jsmom31... I was in propagation class and that is correct. They rarely keep the variegation once they start growing new babies off cuttings. I think there is a very very very very very small chance that they will keep the variegation but its not as pretty which I think at that point is considered a genetic hiccup of sorts.

I received a small snake plant that had one large piece from another plant sticking out of it. It was the mother plant piece and it was so large I had to cut it off. I think cutting it into small pieces for propagation would work very well and four inches sounds optimal but I personally don't know if that is standard.

Propagation class. That would be coolness. I guess what I really want is to learn about grafting. I have read about it, but never tried it. I thought about growing some avocado or citrus seeds just to try grafting, lol.

There's a whole science behind grafting. Some of it is pretty easy but you have to have all the tools and supplies for it. You also need a steady hand and patience (which I have neither lol). One big thing about grafting is that the plants that you graft have to be either related or similar. The reason for this is because plants are kind of like people like how some of us have B blood and some have O blood. Not all blood can be mixed. If the plant is spliced with something that doesn't match it will either die or it will grow only to have cancerous growth or the plant with twist upon each other which of course isn't healthy. The whole thing is so complex that I'm pretty sure I won't be doing it for a living. :p I recommend the class if you are eager for knowledge.

Can anyone give advice on the best way to transplant or revive my newly inherited snake plant? The problem is the long stem that has made the plant unstable. Do I cut for propagation? Is there a way to transplant to make the plant more stable?

I either use a weight (rock or something) at the base or use a wire to kind of help support the top until it gets a little less wobbly by root development. I am not sure if this is what you are asking, so if not, please explain because I'm having a "duh" day, lol.

I was wondering if I could place dirt up the stem more. I don't think the stem, as it is, will be able to support the plant.

Well, I know I would probably wack it, make sure some stem was exposed at the bottom, or take off a leaf or 2, let the cutting dry off for a few days and then poke it in the soil, but I don't want to tell anyone else to do it, sometimes it works, and sometimes not. I think the base would put out some new growth, though. That plant isn't showing the variegation that I'm used to seeing in sansevieria.

i love this plant, too! i recently bought one and now it seems to be dying though. every so often, i'll look at it, pull on the leaves a bit and one will come right out the soil, as if it's rotten. i took a piece and stuck it in water and it's doing well. can i just stick this piece back in the soil or should i wait for roots to grow? and as for the drying up, rotting plants, what should i do?
