Ok I had a beautiful white dahlia growing and before reading how to store in the fall --Zone 6 I plucked it out of the ground today; then learned I should have waited for a frost. What should I do i now? i have cleaned it off cutoff theplant except for about an inch of green growth. I have about clump of 5 bulbs connected together and presently its hanging upside down in my garage. Will it survive should I get it somehwere colder than 50 degrees? and when to store in vermiculite.
Thanks in advance

It will dry out if you hang it upside down in the garage and may get too cold. I'd pack it in slightly moist Pro Mix (or any soil less mix) or peat moss and keep it around 40 for the winter - peek every month or so to see the mix remains only slightly moist or they'll rot.
I agree with pirl. I used to keep my tender bulbs in a closed box with peat moss and stored in a cool, dark place in the basement. I'm in zone 5 though, so the garage would have been too cold for me.
Garages have such wide range of temperatures and if a cold winter wind chills the garage too much you can lose the dahlias. I much prefer the basement for storage but do remember to check them each month.
thanks to all for advice will try to be a smart dahlia saver
