Landscaping between two houses where the yard runs together.

Hi - My front yard and my neighbor's front yards run together. We aren't allowed to put up any type of fencing in our front yards, and I am undure how to landscape my yard while accounting for my neighbors yard? One one side, it's all grass...my grass just runs into my neighbor's grass. I would like to have some type of separation/natural fence there. On the other side, my neighbor has put down edging in a random curvy shape, and then planted some shrubs and put down wood chips that sort of thin out until they hit my grass. But the shrubs look like crap, and he doesn't weed the area or anything. I am unsure how to landscape on my side so that it blends? Or should I just landscape my portion and not worry about his?

If you landscape your side and put tall enough things in the back, you wouldn't have to look at their side so it won't matter whether it blends or not. If they took good care of their side then it might be worth trying to do something coordinated, but since it sounds like they're not going to your best bet is to do your part and not worry about theirs. Another thing to consider...I know you're not allowed to put up a fence, but are there any rules about putting up a row of trellises between the yards? You could grow some pretty vines on them and that way you'll get the separating effect of a fence without technically having a fence.

I have much the same situation here ... no definite marking of the property line between houses. There are no regulations so I can put up a fence and I may do that (picket) but I have also considered just marking the property line with a row of bricks at ground level. This would give my neighbor a mowing strip and would put a back edge on a future flower bed should I decide to go in that direction. I could also put up my fence just inside the brick marker and plant shrubs ... flowers ... All kinds of possibilities.

I did this years ago when we lived near Augusta and it kind of helped everybody know where to plant and what area to take care of.
