Old healthy hedges died.

My house has been in the family since it was new (1950). Hedges were planted on both sides of the house at that time. Never had a problem in all these years until now. Maybe the last neighbors poured car stuff, have no idea. Bought plants that looked like what is there. It was a Jasmine. I realize I need something that grows fast. Side of my yard looks silly with the middle of the hedges gone.

Without more information you can't rule out something that the neighbors did or some other pest, disease, etc issue but keep in mind that plants don't live forever even if you do everything right--if these were the original plants that were planted in 1950 they were pretty old and it could be it was just their time to go.

Thank you so much for your input. Wondering what I can plant between the hedges. I guess over 50 is kinda old, shows my age .

If you want to keep the look of the hedges, you could buy more of whatever plant the hedges are...it'll take them a few years to grow to size but that way you'll be able to keep the look the house has always had. Or you could take out the remaining plants in the hedge and start from scratch with something else (maybe more of a mixed border type of planting so you don't have all the same thing--that way you're less likely to lose multiple plants all at once and wind up with this situation again). Unless you take everything out and start from scratch, you're going to have a few years where things look a bit uneven--either you'll plant something different in the middle of the hedge that'll grow fast and fill the space but won't be the same as the plants around it, or you'll have to wait a few years for the new hedge plants to grow and fill in.

Thank you, Ecrane 3 for your help. I'm thinking of something different, yet I can trim as a hedge. If I knew this site was so helpfull, I would have taken some pics. Will do tomorrow.
