Garden Photos #45
Wow! That's some serious inside garden! Looks very modern & neat! Very cool!
nice pics guys... the hd we went to today had tons of orchids ... I was drooling.. but kept walking
so pretty!!
Beautiful, Kathy. Never forget seeing my friend's greenhouse with thousands of orchids in bloom.
Nice Booj!
love them all!!
The way I ended up with over 300 orchids was that one year I was cutting down the garden and getting really depressed about winter coming and started buying orchids to combat my feeling low. Each year I get this amazing show in fall because I bought mostly ones that were in bloom in fall.
that's great.. I can see how that addiction can start.. I would have bought 3 or 4 today (if Randy wasn't there)
:)
300 orchids! (mouth open in awe! lol! - good for you! ☺)
300!!??? Geeze! Was gonna ask how you had so many in bloom at once.....I have a friend who has >1,000 African violets--You 2 should talk--LOL! I love the pic of the cym x with the shadow--very cool!
Very nice. is that a mini geranium?
Mini African violet--It's name is Shirl's Blushing Bride. It's in a 2" pot. Very cute!
VERY! more pics please :-)
Finally got back on line here. Great pics everyone. Farm animals, last of the garden color, orchids and violets. Something for everyone and all wonderful. Grey here today and waiting for more rain so I do enjoy all the pretty pics you all post.
Do those mini orchids and violets need special temps and soil? I'm very intrigued.
kathy nice pictures of your orchids!
Oh my! Pv you have dmail ...
Boy, look what i've missed! Beautiful blooms!!
Karen Your Orchids are fabulous.
We are just about to have blooms on 1 plant.
The cyms here are later, December - Feb. Just 1 a yellow similar to your fragarent
Nice pics, Kathy, Jen and Phoebe! I especially love the orchids and AV's. I have 2 orchids left of the three I bought last year. The Phaliopsis one died on me, and one of my others is half dead, but maybe it will continue on. They need to be fertilized. I think the 2 that survived are Cymbidiums, though I'm not sure.
Karen
I absolutely have no clue with the orchids, except to be careful not to overwater! But I almost always have one in spike or bloom. Think I'm gonna lokk more into some of the mini varieties...I think it is an orchid thing to appear half dead when not in bloom Karen--Kathy would have to take over from here...LOL!
Orchids are def on my list
These are supposedly the 3 easiest to take care of
Moth Orchids
Moth orchids are some of the least expensive, most common, and longest-blooming orchids available. In fact, one bloom spike can look great for four months or more. The flowers appear in shades of white, pink, red, green, yellow, orange, and purple.
How to Grow Them: Give moth orchids (Phalaenopsis selections) a spot in low, medium, or bright light and water weekly or every other week. Promote more and larger blooms by feeding moth orchids monthly with a fertilizer formulated for orchids. The plants do best in temperatures from 50 to 75F.
Here's a Hint: A drop in temperatures helps encourage them to bloom.
Dendrobium Orchids
Dendrobium flowers, often seen at florists in bouquets, offer long-lasting blooms (they stay looking good for a month or more) in a wonderful array of colors from white to purple, pink, and even green.
How to Grow Them: Dendrobium selections prefer a spot in medium to bright light. Water them weekly or every other week and fertilize them monthly with a plant food formulated for orchids. They do best in temperatures from 50 to 70F.
Here's a Hint: Hundreds of dendrobiums are available; the most common types keep their foliage all year and bloom on new stems.
Oncidium Orchids
Sometimes called dancing lady orchids, oncidiums offer lots of colorful smallish flowers in clusters of 50 or more. They commonly appear in shades of yellow, purple, red, pink, and white, often with flamboyant, contrasting markings.
How to Grow Them: Oncidium selections do best in medium to bright light. Water them weekly or every other week and feed them monthly in spring and summer with an orchid fertilizer. They do best in temperatures from 50 to 75F.
Here's a Hint: Some oncidium orchids are wonderfully fragrant -- watch for them to add an even more delightful note to your indoor garden
I've been eyeing them(orchids) for a while, despite Jan's(Grandpapas) encouragement I haven't dared to tresspass in that area yet. I lose power way to often here and worry about them freezing. I'll buy the generator then the orchids. lol
All of my orchids froze last year when the window over the plant shelf opened from the top---I rarely go in there, the room's closed off with french doors, so until I went in to water....then I took a small orchid from Booj's RU---it looks fine---my fingers are crossed. When I look at Booj's orchids, I, too, want to run out & get some.
I feel like a very bad influence.
Celeste, I'm sposta get a generator this year. We missed a terrible ice storm by one mile last year. No power for 7-10 days. Trees in nearby woods were all snapped off like someone bombed the place. I'm terrified of losing my orchids. I would cry for a year!
You better get a generator!! My friend had one just for the GH - not for the house!
Yer a GOOD influence, boojum! I've been on the orchid forum and at Andy's all day. LOL! And....the topic of micro mini orchids actually came up on one of my other av forums today! Someone looking for a micro-mini paph for a terrarium.
Single cell?
But Boojum, your the best kind of very bad influence. ^_^
That was close (storm) wasn't it? I have gone 11 days once, 6 days the second time and 3 days just last year with out power, so I know better. My Christmas Cactus had blooms on it and they all fell off after 3 days without electricity. They are budding now and we are due for 2 storms before Friday! LOL

Jen, the moth orchid, or Phalaenopsis, which is supposed to be the easiest to grow, is the one that died on me. I think I overwatered it. I was being a little too zealous in my watering of the poor thing, I guess. I saw a bunch of Phalaenopsis orchids at Walmart last time I was in there for $15 each. I was tempted to try again.
