Hey guys i have this plant and i bought it last year. I repotted it and it was doing fine, and i mean fine as in it didn't go anywhere didn't grow nor die so i left if alone till recenly i decided to do something about it i figure it needed more light so i put it ouside because the soil started to smell like mold so i stoped watering it so much ,but now all the leaves burned, and turned black i figured it was because of the sun. I brought it back inside cut most of the black leaves off and one new leafe apeared is there something else i can do to help it
HELP!!
That is a peace lily, or spathyphyllum. They like moist, fast draining soil, but let the surface dry a little before you water, so you don't encourage root rot. You may need to water more as it starts to fill in your planter. When your plant gets a little fuller, you could fertilize once a week with a 1/4 strength fertilizer. Mix it weakly, the use it weekly. I put mine out in the shade during the summer, but for the winter, I have it in a eastern facing window grouped with other plants. They help raise the humidity for each other and also kind of shade each other so that they get dappled light. I had a spath cutting growing in afternoon sun outside, and the leaf color was yellow-green, so now it is coming in a much prettier deep green since it's out of the blazing sun :). Just some thoughts.
I agree that your plant is a Spathiphyllum, commonly called "Peace Lily": http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57837/ They prefer bright shade, no direct sunlight.
I don't know all my peace lily leaves are pointed not roundedand they mound not grow up like that, looks more like a diffenbachia (sp) to me.
It looks to me, that the pot is to big. Peace lilies do best when they are somewhat pot bound. I am afraid to repot mine because every time I do, they go into a slump and sometimes never come out of it.
