Here is an inside shot. It had arms that spaned the whole front of the house this summer. I cut off about three arms, about 4 ft long each, cut them up to see if I could root them. It is three years old now. This is the first time for buds..
Growing indoors over the Winter (Part 1) ...
Oh drat!!! I got whiteflies all over the place.. most of the mgs are done in, but the fat bodies are doing okay, I am hoping it doesn't spread. I should have known it is just too dry here for indoor growing.. I've got to take all the infected plants outdoors, too many chances in them skipping over to my caudiciform plants. I've been fighting them for two weeks and the mgs don't look good at all.., I cut off all the leaves off the caudiciform plants and have only stems now, but at least these are not going to be lost (hopefully).
Becky, how are yours doing? We don't even have the heat turned on yet, but it is still too dry here.
Debra - Did your Stictocardia ever bloom? All those vines are doing great in your basement!
Antoinette - So sorry to hear about your I. nil vines being destroyed by white flies. I remember you said that was a problem there. Hopefully, any Spring I. nils will do great and bloom profusely for you!
My indoor vines are doing great. Getting quite big. No buds that I can tell yet, though. :-( I am not used to it taking this long for any I. nils to bloom. Usually they bloom within 4-6 weeks from seed.
Here are the two shelves of vines taken today. This has been a really interesting experiment so far to grow them under lights like this. :-)
Bottom shelf.
Well, yours are looking good. Very healthy plants. Yes, for some reason they take longer to bloom, the seeds have a memory and know it is not Spring... short days, etc..
Becky, I may have missed the post, but did you start them right in the cups?
Ronnie - I started them by soaking them in water and watching them closely for germination. Are you planning to grow some indoors?
Yes Becky, I do a few every year. I wanted to save some space and do a few more and liked the cup Idea. I can get the 20 oz at the dollar store.
I usually soak mine or do the coffee filter method first too. Just wondered if you started them right in the dirt in the cup. I am hoping to keep the white fly to a minimum. I get quite a few.
Ronnie - The cups my vines are now growing in are the final size and are 32 oz. cups.
Lovin' the variegated leaves!
Thanks, Susan! :-)
Did I tell you that most of my daylily seedlings from last year grew a nice size this year and bloomed! They were all so beautiful!
Looking good, Becky..
The buds are still growing on the sticto, and the thing keeps vining too.. it is out the doorway when I get home, I wind it back inside the closet.. sheesh.. will go take a picture as best as I can ( it is hard cuz of the angle of the doorway) this closet is under the stairwell that leads down the basement stairs.
Lovely variegated leaves
Great healthy looking vines Becky! Makes me want to grow a few too but I know better.
Helena, SMART Cookie you are, those whiteflies would probably find you also.. I've been using sticky traps here and they are working, but I still see a few. I probably should have started them about 2 months ago instead of just recently.
