Growing indoors over the Winter (Part 1) ...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky, the plant is supposed to be SOH..
woofie, I am glad you are home safe and sound.. welcome back! I am also glad you have plants that are still alive and trying to brighten our days..

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Thanks for clarifying what your MG vine was. Couldn't tell from the photo and apparently missed the name further up in this thread. Glad to hear that baby is producing seeds for ya! :-)

Woofie - So glad to hear that you have recovered. Tis the season to get sick! We've had a lot of sick kids and adults at my school right before Christmas break! Awesome to hear that your plants are doing well indoors! Sounds like you need to pot them up into larger containers!

I've started a small selection of MG seeds, but mostly veggie seeds on my window shelf. See photo.

Here you can see the glass vase with the I. indica cuttings rooting nicely now. It sure took them long enough! And next to the vase is a plastic bin full of styrofoam cups with seedlings. In the top left corner of the container is two "Sunspots" MG seedlings from Debra! I have been planting 2 seeds now instead of one because often only one will sprout, but in this case, both did! Sunspots is a smaller vine, so thought it might be better to grow in a pot on the window shelf. I planted some other MG seeds, too, but none have sprouted yet. (Those in that bin were planted on Christmas Eve!)

And ... outside on the hanging bird feeder was a Painted Bunting bird. So nice to see them again after a year of absence. :-) Not a good photo because it was shot looking through a window AND screen porch. Zoomed in and still had to crop the photo down to see the bird better. Beautiful birds! I keep trying to get a photo of the hummer, but she is just too shy and too fast! :-(

Oh pooh! This was posted on the wrong thread! I wish DG would add an option to edit or replace photos along with writing in posts. (sigh) Sorry this photo is off-topic ...

So glad you did Becky. One of the most beautiful of all birds. Just
wonderful to see an actual photo.
Your seedlings all look great.

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Oh, yea! Jumping up and down this am! I know, it doesn't look like all that much, but this bloom is off an accidental cross from last year, and it looks just like the parent! The plant got killed off before I was able to gather seeds, but I found just a few ripe pods low on the plant. I THINK this is a cross from a Jamie Lynn and a Kniola's Black.

Luv that one, Woof - those pale shades of blue & fuchsia look like they're shimmering

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Stunning Woof, I love it!! If you get any seeds I would love to trade for some.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

A beautiful bloom Woofie.

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, if anyone wants to experiment, the original plant was grown from seeds gathered from a Kniola's Black. The only other I. purpurea in the garden was Jamie Lynn (well, there was a Crimson Rambler on the other side of the dog pen, so anything's possible, I suppose). Since it has that fuchsia star, I'm guessing Jamie was the culprit. I'm trying to grow out a few Jamie's and Kniola's over the winter and see if I can do a little deliberate pollinating. I don't have a really good place to grow them, so I was just astounded to see that bloom this am. :-) I'll probably be cranking up the greenhouse early this year, tho. :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - Thanks so much!

Woofie - Neat looking bloom! MGs do cross, so you may very well have a unique cross on your hands! Good luck growing some this winter! Glad to hear you are going to be in the greenhouse earlier! I hope you'll get lots of photos to post! :-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky I love that bunting! I am glad you have such a great array of seed cups going.
woofie, that flower is absolutley beautiful!
I have another bloom on the vine still going downstairs it is from the Star of India. I missed its full bloom, it is closed up partially now, but I have already posted pics of them. out of the three plantesis seedlings only one is still going and at a rapid rate. My seedlings upstairs in the south window are going well, and one vine has buds all over it so can't wait to see that one. I am downstairs so can't post pics from here.. will post pics later tonight of the winter seedlings. My I. Indica is really going crazy everywhere, but the starts I rooted seemed to die down when I transplanted them. I should have left them in water. Little pink picotee is also still vining and flowering. it is so small about an inch and a half.

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Oh, I'm jealous. Star of India are sooooo pretty!
Just finished pulling down the dead vines on my back porch and harvesting the seeds from a bunch of Yoi no Tsuki and some pretty pink NOID nils.

edited to remove kind of sniping comment. Sorry 'bout that.

Finally got some photos organized to post a few that have flowered for me.

This one I grew over the summer and a seed spouted so I brought it in. The plant is about 3'' tall!! The flower was pretty small too!

This was bought as blue picotee on EBay. I think it's a pretty shade of light blue.

This last one was a grow out from Beth as Fuji No Monet. This is forming some nice seed pods too!

Oh, my, they're all lovely! Are these all winter flowers?
I like them all, but somehow that last one really strikes my fancy, the Fuji no Monet. Yum. Looks good enough to eat!

They are all beautiful; I especially like the margined flowers.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

All lovely Ronnie. I'm partial to the Fuji no Monet too Woolfie.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks !!

Yes Woof I am growing them on my windowsill under lights.

Some are doing great while others are straggly. Battling white fly is a pain too.

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Editing post to just leave a "Thank You."

Woofie - It went right over my eyes and head! LOL!

Ronnie - How amazing that you are growing so many beauties right now! Just stunning - ALL of them!! Keep those photos coming! :-) Could you post a photo of your under lights set-up on your window sill? I'd love to see it. Mine are just in a south facing window getting sun most of the day! It actually gets pretty warm even when it is cold in that window. The I. nils really like that spot! :-)

(Zone 7a)

Woof, I'm missing my dad and best friend this Christmas and the world outside my window looks like a skate boarder's ice/snow coated vertical surface and the wind is forecast at 36 mph tomorrow and we have to drive in it. I just know that if an opportunity were to present itself for my foot to enter my chops, there would be instant contact far beyond the speed of light. So I feel for ya. Not to worry - you are loved.

karen

Ronnie, your fleurs are a tall drink of water - so beautiful

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Good, Becky! Thanks.
Yeah, it would be nice to see that light setup. I really need more light for my little ones. Does anyone know if those compact fluorescent bulbs help much? Unless I fire up the GH, I don't have any good lighting indoors. And with the health problems I've been having this past month, it may be a few more weeks before I can get the GH useable.

We cross-posted, bluespiral. Thanks for understanding. The last few weeks have been pretty rough.

I have a few things sprouting for the winter... nothing will be as beautiful as yours Ronnie, I planted the fugi no monet all of them last year and didn't get past the first set of leaves..
I really liked the colours of them when I looked them up..

remember last year I grew albevinia and I. Lindenheimeri from seed? Here they are today.. there is a salvia they are twining on right now.. I will be re-arranging them soon..

Awwww, don't we all?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

i have no clue why these pics are turned sideways on here.. sorry bout that. they look upright from this end..

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Hmmm, are you by any chance having problems with your neck? :-)

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Do you remember the pot trellises I mentioned earlier? Wanted to give you all an update on them. Took a while to get and I was just a bit disappointed in them. The trellises are supposed to just slide up and clip onto a 5 inch pot, so I ordered the trellises and 5" net pots. Weeeelllll, either they sent me the wrong pots, or net pots aren't the same size as regular pots. As you can see:

Thumbnail by woofie
Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

But they're still pretty cool, and I managed to attach this one by the simple expedient of running a bit of wire through the holes in the net pot and around the bottom of the trellis.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

ooo that is way cool! Keep us posted how the vines grow on it , wouuld ya? I love your coleus in the back ground.. we have same tastes I think.. :D

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Will do. I just transplanted that vine from a small pot; hope I didn't damage it....that's the one that had the pretty bloom. Unfortunately, now the whole assembly no longer fits in the spot with the heat mat, darn it! Hmmm, would my DH kill me if I put another heat mat on the table? hee hee hee

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I have found my DH lets me do what I want with Gardening as long as he doesn't have to do anything..it keeps me busy while he watches his football.
