Hi everyone, major problem with Red Fire Ants. I have just moved to Florida, I have 2 dogs that have access to the backyard and I find I have a swarm of Red Fire Ants in every part of the backyard garden. What can I do considering I have 2 dogs that use that area everyday? Also I'm getting eaten alive by them when I go out to do some garden maintenance. I really need help. Thanks. Susan
Red Fire Ants, heeeeeeeeeeeeelp!
Aren't they awful?? We buy a product with spinosad in it from Lowe's. Hang on... I'll go out in the garage and see what it's called. "Green Light Fire Ant Control with Conserve". Conserve is a trade name for spinosad, which is the ingredient which works. It's safe for humans and pets and doesn't hurt insects like butterflies and bees. http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/newsletters/hortupdate/mar04/Spinosad.html
keep a jug of vinegar handy. pour it on the stings, otherwise you will get little blisters that scar and it also takes the stinging sensation away.
when you go to lowes or hd or ace or wherever you buy your stuff, you'll see lots of different fire ant products. do not use amdro or similar products where your pets are. it's sweet and they will eat it. i use spectracide once and done and while i prefer not to put it in the fenced kennel area, sometimes i have to and it has not bothered my dogs.
