What seeds to use in baggies with kids?

Portsmouth, VA

Hi!
I would like to do the baggie seed germination with my students this Sunday. We live in Southeastern VA and was wondering what seeds would work best for this time of year.
Thanks!

I am not sure if I am asking in the right place, but I am new :)

The answer depends somewhat on the age of the children and your objective for the lesson. (former teacher coming out in me) Anyway, I have done this with younger children using beans. The way I did it was by placing the bean in a clear glass jar, held in place by a wet paper towel. Then you can watch the root going down and the little sprout going up. haha. You could probably accomplish the same using a ziplock bag.

I think you could probably plant the seedlings, but our classroom objective did not go to the final plant as much as seeing the way seeds sprout.

Another GREAT classroom project is to plant an amaryllis bulb for the classroom which will bloom in time for Christmas.
