Is it really important to aerate lawn

Litchfield Park , AZ(Zone 9b)

I am wondering if it is really important to aerate an established lawn? What will it do for the lawn?
We have been quoted $299 to do our lawn (about 1/2 acre).

My current concern with my lawn is the tunnels that the moles are creating.
Thanks,
Dee

Here are some links that may help you decide if your lawn needs to be aerated, and should you do it yourself.

You live in Wisconsin. Unless you have poured great amounts of insecticide on your lawn, you should have a good supply of night crawlers & earthworms. They do a better job of aerating than the companies can. The other thing is they haven't hired a billing worm yet.

Around here the riding lawnmower takes care of the molehills. Where the mower can't get, we walk on the area...that way any grass roots broken are reconnected with the soil. Unless you have done a lot of driving in your yard, or have really heavy clay soil, I doubt you need aerate. You may give your county agent a call and ask for their guidelines on aeration. And you may just need to de-thatch the lawn....that can be handled with a rake....grin

My husband has an aerater that I bought him. Well its like a toy to him. He decided that our new grass that we planted in the side yard under the trees needed to be done. Well when he got done it was like he had plowed it. He was so proud. Guess what the grass died...lol. I had to replant the grass.

Moto of the story, watch what toys you buy hubby....lol

We have lived on this place for 27 years. We have never fertilized our lawn. Never removed grass clippings. Aerated the lawn, I hope not. Never sprayed weeds. (Do spot spray thistles). Always mow at 2½" high.
So we have a beautiful lawn that stays green even in dry weather.
Did I mention it also never gets watered!
I have plowed up lots of our lawn to plant flowers.
