deadheading and seeds

I was wondering, if you deadhead a flower, can you still use the seeds from it. I'm not sure if I understand the process. does deadheading prevent the flower from seeding or what. I have a few marigold plants and I want them to continue flowering for as long as they can but I would like to keep some seed for next year. What do I need to do?

I believe it must dry on the plant, I might be wrong and will learn a new method :>)

Depending on how many seeds you want, you can remove all but one spent bloom when you dead head a plant. By the time you deadhead again, you can probably remove the original dried seed head and leave one more to dry....keeps the plant blooming and lets you collect seed also. Helps keep things looking neat and tidy.

Deadheading forces/helps many plants to keep reblooming (annuals and perennials). It probably works best with short lived plants that therefore need to seed a lot. You can always collect ripe seeds at the end of the growing season when you likely pull up or cut back the plant.
