Cold Frames

Edmond, OK

Can I overwinter my Boston Ferns and Asparagus Ferns in a cold frame? I live in the midwest.

I don't think that'll be enough--I suspect you'd need a supplemental source of heat as well. Probably better to bring them inside unless you've got a greenhouse that you can heat.

Boston fern's freeze real easy. Our asperagus ferns, we leave under the carport all winter. If the temp is going to be in the twenties, I through a sheet over them and then an old plastic tarp. We have some growing in the yard and the cold kills them back but they come right back the next spring. A friend of ours, cuts her Boston ferns off to the ground and moves them to the south side of the house and puts hay over them. Come back every spring.
