What a happy surprise!!
When I went to transplant my little paw paw trees into separate pots (they grew from seed and are now about 2 feet tall, and living on my balcony), I turned over the soil in one of the paw paw pots and lo and behold-- little (approx 2" long) red wiggly worms!!!
Perhaps that's why that one particular paw paw tree was the largest of the bunch??
So...did the worms come from the potting soil that I got from the drugstore? They couldn;t have come from the ground cuz I'm 6 stories up. Can I take some of theis wormy soil and add some of it to all the paw paw pots and get more worms???
Can you tell that the only knowledge I have of worms has to do with going fishing???
Beautiful red worms
The worms may have come from your potting mix, especially if it sat awhile at the nursery/packaging plant it originated from, but they also get transported by birds. Yes, if you distribute the soil to the other pots, more than likely more worms will grow. you might want to look into a mini compost bin for your balcony so you can grow your own worms and make great fertilizer for your plants. Here are a few how-to links.

Plus it will provide you with bait for your next fishing trip....grin
Thanks for all this great info !!!
Also looking forward to my next fishing trip...!
You are very welcome...enjoy your catch o'the day....grin
You got the worms from eggs that were in your compost. Worm eggs will last forever. If there isn't enough moisture they will stay dormant until the moisture is right and hatch. You can freeze them and when you take them out and they warm up they will hatch. Worms are very good at keeping the species alive.
eeeewww....you're a better person than me Acemoose, i would have tossed 'em off the balcony lol
Funny Lynnie!! Naw once you get a little worm juice on your fingers, piece of cake after that lol Acemoose enjoy your new tenants.
