We just bought our first home (we had been renting it from her father) so now i can put in my first greenhouse. I am going to pick up a 10'x12' deal off of ebay so we will se how it works out for me.
VIII Annual Aroid Show and Sale at Fairchild
The illustrus is a beautiful plant... I do not have one of those in my collection YET! I have a good bit of the black magic which is also very beautiful.
I'm slowly getting there...that makes 4 that I have...I have a green one I don't know the name of though
I have all kinds and I am not stopping! I have an addiction and DG is my "Support Group"
Whenever you are ready for something straight from Aroidia, just let me know. Here's a peek:

Most of my work involves producing hardier giants with color and texture. I'm getting closer all the time . . .
yeah I'll take 1000 of those please....lol
I like that! It's awesome. daydreaming of where I can put one now!
Oh i have seen your work! I love several things aroida has to offer. I am debating on a spot right now but eventually I would love to get the rainbow eucalyptus. I also plant to get some air-pots from you guys but I have to wait until the wife says i can spend more money ha ha ha. I have also been interested in that Rubodora you guys created, but like I said, my wonderful wife controls our money (for good reason!)
Yeah I bought a borneo giant from Brian Williams in June. It came in a 4" pot i think. It is now in a 15 or 20 gallon pot and I have already separated one baby from it!
I separate "babies" using a machete and shovel. My "babies" are already 6 feet tall when I separate them! You can't see it too easily in the picture but now my tallest plant has over 6 feet of clear trunk.
I waited until mine was about a foot tall then removed it from it's mother. The funny thing is... I began my interest in plants only about a year ago if that! My father has been into horticulture his entire life which is why i feel i have distanced my self from it through my childhood. But now I love plants and can't seem to absorb enough information! I love tropical plants but most of all the Araceae Family is by far the most interesting to me!
You may find it hard to believe but I've been growing aroids for over 30 years. I do keep my time machine in good repair, however!
Those big Alocasias are labeled as "Alocasia sp." by FTG; I have one of them and I call it "Big Mac". It is very similar to the Borneo Giant, but with a few subtle differences. I went and crossed it with the Borneo Giant and some of the results were the huge Alocasias on display at the show. Redland Farms bought some seedlings from me and grew them on, then displayed them this year.
Ha ha ha a botanist and a time/space Engineer awesome! In a way, I can't wait to see what 30 years of botanical knowledge will do for me and hopefully others!
Before my family and I headed home on Sunday... We stopped by the redland fruit and spice park. It was pretty interesting to taste the different fruits! And I finally got to try my first dragon fruit! Wasn't life changing but I had always wondered what one tasted like.
oh wow...I love them...I didn't know there were so many varieties...I will be having fun with plant files and my want list tonight that is for sure!
I envy you guys in your warm climate
Trina, let me know if you add to your want list so I can see if either I have them or can get them.
Ha ha ha. I am also loving the fact that for the past couple of hours the Aroid Forum has been at the top of the page!!! ha ha ha
That's where it should be, IMHO!
I know! They need a "Sticky" so that it stays up there! The majority of my plant collection are aroids. And the percentage is only getting larger.
I agree.- it does need to stay at the top! Congrats Lariann on your wins ! Would love to make a trip to Florida someday to take advantage of some of those type sales. (those of you interested in what Lariann offers - you need to read all the positve feedback left in Garden Watchdog! ---http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/6404/ )
Thanks Dan, for sharing and good luck on your learning journey ! Good thing you are starting out so young. Wish I had the passion when I was younger. Family, finance, career, etc tends to get in the way of the younger people, that seems to be why when you reach my age, you find more people into gardening... imo.
Indeed, i think my wife tends to see it this way... I could be out bar hopping or doing something bad. I stick around the house, taking care of things not letting them go rampant. I also think she likes to see me so passionate about something.
LariAnn I think there's like 200 or more things already on that list....every time someone shows a pic or asks a question about one I look it up...If I like it it goes on the list! LOL
Trinawitch... Just wait until I go on an excursion to Borneo and Sumatra and bring back pictures! Then your list will grow! Ha ha ha
Dan - only problem is so much of what you'd see there would be very difficult to grow here. the A. robusta grows like a weed there but almost impossible to keep alive here, as an example. I want those plants only to be able to get pollen from them so I can breed hardier, easier to grow types. Hence the Robudora and others. . .
I know! I will have to settle with photos :( But the experience alone would be humbling.
bad trina...been looking at the araceaes and adding ALOT of stuff to my list
Ha ha ha, I gave some voodoo lilies to my neighbor and he loves them. His wife thinks it is so interesting. He comes over from time to time when i am out working in the yard and i show him around and he said "I will never go to a nursery again! Just pot up all them babies you get and I will buy them." I haven't charged him yet though. I just get tickled that someone like what I have.
Wow trina! 339 items in your want list! You don't like tequila do you? You have like 20 species of agave on there!
I like plants what can I say and I didn't know tequila came from agave...Tequila rose anyone....woohooo! are you sure only 339 I've been adding them all day
Well it may have gone up a few in the past 5 minutes.
well if they had a button I could push to just put everything in plant files in my wish list then I'd use that button...LOL
Trina,
Uh, oh, I've got a few of those Agaves (I think three of the nicest), and a bunch of the Alocasias . . . Did you just get a big inheritance? LOL
No I wish, though then I'd have the house and stuff done on the 33 acres I have in Missouri...planty of room for my wish list plants LOL
That is so funny DanK I have that same exact photo in front of the waterlily pond at Fairchild that I took of my husband and daughter several years ago. Let me see if I can find it
I'm so jealous!!! I wasn't able to go to the Aroid show and sale, after waiting all year for it!!! Thanks to all who shared photos.
LariAnn, congrats on your awards! I'm very happy for you. I'm scheduled to be back in the SW Florida area on Sunday and will contact you shortly thereafter.
Dan. congrats on your wonderful purchases!
Marianne
I have enjoyed viewing all the picture's that everyone has added and I can see why your Philodendron 'Maharlika' took best in show LariAnn..very nice plant.
DanKistner, the last picture you added look's like a beautiful place and I have to add that the Araceae family plant's are my favorite of all as well.
