Summer Squash Takes Over While on Vacation!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

I arrived home last night from an 8 day vacation. Prior to leaving, I have been going out every day to pick the summer squash, as they grow so fast.

Look what I arrived home to! There were six of these monster squash! Just 8 days and they are GOLIATHs! The biggest squash is 18" long and 13" in diameter at the thickest part (see photo).

I do think they will be too tough to eat but they sure are impressive to look at. I wonder what would have happened if I had been gone longer?!?

much longer and you could add a door and use them as tool sheds.. they will be seedy, but should be good cut and cooked with tomatoes and onion..

Thanks, jjconcepts. That is good to know. We have had our fill of squash this year, and the crop has already been frozen for the winter, so I am giving these beauties away on craigslist.

I hope someone enjoys them!

I just made a big pot of minestrone with grated zucchini in it. With a squash as big as yours, I'd remove the skin and seeds first, then grate up the flesh and throw it into the soup pot.
