Hi, I have this Japanese maple in a pot I live in Massachusetts. I was wondering if I have to bring it in the house come winter time. My neighbor told me to burry the pot in the ground for winter. Don't want it to die so any help I will greatly appreciate.
Japanese Maple
While most Japanese Maples are cold hardy to zone 5, a Japanese Maple in a pot will not survive freezing temperatures. The roots are too exposed to the cold and there is not the benefit of the ambient ground temperature to help the roots survive. Below is a link with further info for you.

I have a lot of J P's and I bury all my pots in the compost pile . I pack the compost between the pots .My compost has broken down to almost dirt , so no extra heat in there . I'm in Z-7-a. Don't take the tree in , it needs to have a cold period and go dormant, just bury it . You can go to the Japanese maple forum to get good info too .
Digger, AH isn't a subscriber. AH, if you want to sink them into the ground in their pots, do so in a protected area and you may want to make a sandwich-board type A-Frame over them to keep the ice and snow off of them.
I've had a JP, pretty exposed, in my front yard here in Wellesley for the past couple of years and it's thrived.
(Sorry, I can't find the camera to computer cord for a pic.)
Japanese Maples will do fine in the ground in zone 5, it is potted JP's that will have a problem.
I just finished burying another 50 or so . THAT is work , but finished for the winter . digger
Good on you, Digger...need to change your name to Protector of JPs....grin
I enjoy growing them and spending the money when they sell . lol digger
I hear ya, cher. Love it when the fun gives back in tangible ways....grin
Tangible would be payment in gold - our money: not so "backed" anymore! grin...
Getting anything back sounds good to me.....grin
What happy little trees Digger. You have been busy.
All those buried and you are still walking upright....wow....grin
One might think you kinda like JPs.....grin
Boy, I tell you , that gets harder every year . I was going to sell a bunch of the seedlings this last year , but was tied up Every weekend ,so held over . When these are gone and my grafted ones are planted , I'm through . Too many other things to do . digger
Isn't it amazing how quickly a "few grafts" can become so time consuming? I have 4 JPs but about 2 dozen that I would love to have....DH just says....."we are walking, not stopping, walking forward"....lol
Where in the heck is Prairieville , not on my maps . I haven't even looked in any nurseries this year . Have all I want of everything still in buckets . Several different magnolias , paperbark maple , Franklenia , mohawk viburnum , on &on .
again , where is prairiville ? D
Just southeast of Baton Rouge (next parish), about 50 landmiles northwest of New Orleans..I am right on Bayou Manchac( 1/4 mile)
We will be through there next Wed. What's up on I -12 to have coffee, I'll bring you some small bloodgoods . I didn't know they would do good that far south and need acid soil .
That would be too kind of you. The WALKER exit off of I-12 would be the easiest for both of us. Getting on and off I-12 closer into Baton Rouge can be a real pain....anytime, not just rush hours....grin...and I have a back road from my home to Walker. Any idea on time?
Not yet , but am going to try to hit Mobile wed morn for coffee with dirt road .It will be wed . we have to be in Houston at six pm thursday . dmail
I burried it in the ground. Digger my tree is 7" tall how much will it grow each year and do I need to fertilize it?
