Grubs found where nothing was growing???

A few years back . . . grubs destroyed my newly planted backyard lawn. The grass would pull up quite easily, in large patches. My only analogy is . . . a cartoon man removing his toupee.

But Now! . . . I found grubs in some good (well amended) soil. How can this be? Nothing for them to eat?

They might be entirely different species - not all 'white grubs' (larvae of scarb beetles) fed on grass roots; some will feed on organic matter in the soil. See http://www.sdnhm.org/fieldguide/inverts/coti-mut.html for an example.
