why do my oranges fall off before they are ripe?

Satsumas usually are ripe in November to December. The odds are good they are not actually mature enough to eat if you are picking them in September. Check the "name" against a maturity date chart to be sure. I don't know why they wouldn't taste good, but at a guess, something to do with the nutrient levels is likely to be the cause.
The fruit drop is most like caused by the long drought and sudden heavy rains that we experienced this past season. I lost a lot of fruit this year with many of them actually splitting open.
