Morning Glories 2009 #15

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

The small flower speckled ones actually make seeds. I even thought about using one as a fertile parent, crossing it with the pollen (found after much vigilance)off the large flower Fujishibori and maybe eventually getting a more fertile large flower? After getting the grand total of 7 seeds off the Fujishibori the thought has crossed my mind.

Debra, Your small blue looks a lot like hederacea. I like the
Hot Lips salvia. The Salvia's I miss the most , Lady in Red and the one
T and M calls Cherry Blossom.

Helena's Gray Star. I've really enjoyed this one Helena, thank you.

is really variable which makes growing it a lot of fun. Never know what it will do.
Here it was 2 days ago. I will be checking the color more closely when it opens

I love the pink blooms. Would love a few of your Lady in Red sds when we

Debra, Wonderful news about your raise. Helps to offset your DH's bad news. We're still seeing the fall-out from last
yr's horrendous gas prices.

Gautier, MS

Pretty blooms Debra and Jackie.
Your welcome Jackie, I'm glad you like gray star. If that was and unusual bloom you should tag it Jackie.
I like your 10 10 and Purple blizzard Jackie.

Debra, Rebecca is one of my favorites too. I sowed a few seeds late so I'm still waiting for blooms.

Helena, Maybe mile a minute vine. Not a weed to me, very pretty.
Like your Lady laura and Hannah
Mona lovely bloom.

Gautier, MS

Jackie, that's a good name for it. It fits it well.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Grab some seeds from that mile a minute for me would ya? I would pay for postage.. I love the lady laura.. nothing new today.. just lots of all the ones I have posted so far..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Helena, Yes please grab some seeds. It's really pretty.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Well it's not mile a minute vine. Mile a Minute, Ip Cairica has 5 lobed
lvs. Hopefully someone will come along and let us know what it is.
Edited to say I think it has palmate leaves.

well, I love it.. helenahkh u lucky duck to find it!

Gautier, MS

Well, I thought they were pretty. I didn't see any seeds on them but I'll go back to look. I might take a cutting and try to start it that way. I can tell you that our city mowers will show no mercy when their mowing the grass along the roads and that one is so healthy looking growing along the road. The others are more into the ditches but I'll look.

Only one nice bloom today.

Thumbnail by helenahkh
Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Another nice bloom Helena.
2 open today on Sarah's mutant. I need to repot this as it's in a
3 inch pot. Even then it could just quit blooming, same as
my Hattie Bell and a few others.

Thumbnail by patootie
Gautier, MS

Thanks Jackie.

I went back to look for seeds, there some green pods on the older vines but they definitely are not ready. I'll keep going back every week and hope they haven't been mowed.

This is another site more into a ditch, the seeds there were not ripe either. So we'll have to wait. I thought these looked a bit darker.

Edited to say:
OK shoot me (just Kidding), forgot to say that I did get a few seedlings home so maybe I'll get it to grow in pots. The city will eventually mow even in the ditch.

It`s ipomoea cordatotriloba and we have those every year and they survive the city weed killer like troopers. I enjoy viewing them in the ditches but cannot allow them in my yard because they can very easily smother and kill my favorite crape myrtles.

Well here is the last picture of pink flake that I have it had to be brought in today as we are expecting a frost this evening. I still have to keep it alive just until I have some seeds pods that are ready to be picked.

Jackie, Helena, Debra, and James - Lots of gorgeous blooms! Here it is the middle of September and y'all have tons of blooms still. That would be typical in the deep south here in south-central Florida, but most of you live far north of me! I hope y'all get plenty of seeds from your terrific blooms! :-)

I've been hand-pollinating every day before work. Some of my efforts have been paying off as I see nice, big seed pods forming on some of my vines. But ... the Diluted Fuji no Muraski is proving to be a challenge to get pods to form once again. Most of the pods are turning yellow or brown and falling off the vine. Not sure why, because the blooms have been producing lots of pollen. I remember it being discussed before that the self-pollinating of some fancy cultivars make the vines sterile. I am now thinking that may be the issue here. (Much to my utter disappointment!) I thought about trying to cross this cultivar and maybe I still will give that idea a go, but I really liked the blooms/vine just the way it is. So ... it will be interesting to see how many seeds I will actually get from this vine. This is becoming a rare cultivar because of this dilemma and I am rather baffled by this whole situation. But I press on ...

Jackie - I hope you have better luck with yours!!!

I am also seeing that the beautiful Japanese Sazanami and the two solid white NOID vines are NOT producing pods. (Pollen production has stopped on the whites!) The Sazanami is not producing pollen at all. I was crossing it with the white NOIDs, but now that is not possible either. So ... what to do, what to do?

It figures! that some of the most beautiful I am growing currently are sterile. Grrr ...

On the other hand, the smaller blooming vines are still giving me lots of pollen and I see pods all over the vines! :-) Fingers crossed that those pods don't fall off either. The temps here are still very hot. Maybe that is the problem. I am just not sure why this is happening ...

I've got numerous starts that are actually starting to bloom. Need to pot those babies up! LOL! I want to get some "freckled" vines blooming. I am debating whether to grow them indoors or start them in the 5 gallon containers and see what happens. Rust fungus is back. It's that time of year. (sigh) It seems like a mad rush now to get these vines going, blooming, and producing seeds! Fall is just around the corner and we never know whether we will get an early frost or the weather will stay nice until the end of November into December here in this zone of Florida. So the race is on and I am pushing these vines hard! :-)

Here is Diluted Fuji no Muraski.

Mauve Splash is producing some interesting blooms. These blooms are medium size and I have not gotten a bloom flush on them yet. I just fertilized again with Bloom Booster to see if I can pump up the number of blooms.

Another photo of Diluted Fuji no Muraski. I really, really like this vine! Maybe it will surprise when it starts winding down and produce seed pods! I am sure hoping so, anyway! :-)
