nice jen - not sure about that last one - zim went after pedro who just did an olay' to the old guy - the picture and media coverage did not give him justice. gotta love zim though!!!!!
where is danny ainge biting tree rollins finger? best headline ever - "man bites tree"
Coffee Break # 18 - Cooling down
danny did!
sorry about the Iris Jen... bad Wall-y!!
I just ordered about 300 bulbs. Anyone else?
I'm probably at 300, and am fighting with myself not to spend more money, but the other argument is, you never know what's going to happen and I should enjoy a beautiful garden now...
Didn't order any yet. I will probably just order some reticulated iris. And, amazingly, that will probably be all I order for the fall - a first for me. Combination of vanishing space, trying to save money and being lazy.
Didn't order any bulbs. Don't have much money. Got some daylilies, though. Rather pricey ones, like $25 and $30, with a bonus, so I couldn't get many.
Karen
I would not prune it now. Let it grow a bit. Also - it's easier to see the structure when there are no leaves.
Thanks Victor! I'm going to keep it in a container on the deck over the winter. Or do you think I should bring it indoors? We only get a few frosty days in winter and I can probably drag it in on those days.
I would leave it outside in a sheltered area.
i have a few bags of huge yellow daff's, some more reticulated iris, a couple bearded iris all from hd. and the 20 bearded iris from the coop i can't seem to plant and a bunch of allium and hyacinth's from coops coming next week i think. oh and couple bags of crocus and the ones that begin with a m?? brain cramp. maybe 400
Muscari?
jadajoy you will love that beni hime - i agree with victor put it in a protected area on the ground. i would also protect the trunk from critters - i know hd here has plastic guards that are about 6" tall since i already got a few and going back for more.
btw - my beni hime is going in the unheated garage here, i know a dg'r in ohio left hers out last year planted in the ground and it was fine. i lost mine planted in the ground, probably from the ice storm we had, still i am taking no chances.
thank you - yes - blue ones
Thanks Victor and wha.
I know what you mean wha. I just want to get it through the winter and will be protecting it like a hawk. So you keep yours in a container too? Given how slow it grows, I had not planned on ever putting it in the ground. I have possums and voles not to mention the bird chasing dogs trampling through my beds.
Oh! Yours is beautiful! Thats a great looking area. Love the stones against the brick. I dont know why wet bricks, after a rain, are so appealing.. The pot is veeery attractive and japanesey complimentary. Wha, you definitely have an eye for design.
I will go to hd and get that trunk protection.I had been droolin' over that Beni since last year and paid dearly for it and dont want to lose it.
yes beni is pricey - where did you get yours? mine came from wildwood out west - you may need to cut the trunk protector to size - have cut all of mine in half length wise and to height when needed.
Nice JMs---I was planning on planting mine this month--should I winter it in the garage instead?
I got mine from Wildwood too! emailed them and then called and had a long conversation with a very nice woman there about shipping and care. I wanted all the info I could get for my $75.00 sapling. But its a lot bigger than I thought it would be for a two year old. I am very pleased so far. Their packing and concern for their product is excellent. I'm going to call back today and thank her.
I'll make sure to size the protector.
Joyce
That's great, Joyce. I've been recommending Wildwood for years. Sara and Ric are so nice and helpful.
robin which jm's do you have?
And what size? That's very important. In general, I'm for the trees in the ground, unless you are in a very cold area.
good point victor, size is important :)
In general, I prefer fall planting for trees, shrubs and perennials, provided they are not puny. It gives them two growing seasons before having the stress of summer to deal with.
Yes. I have a big Jap Maple in front of my house, in the ground for 5 years now, needs little to no care, and just wanted the beautiful colors of the little Beni for deck adornment.
Thats a good "rule of thumb" Victor.
if you review davidsans maples site he does not recommend planting jm's in the fall because of past failures he has experienced.
He is in a cold, snowy area! I have lost more that I have planted in Spring than fall.
Back to sports for a moment. Tree Rollins bit D. Ainge, not the other way around. Rollins was suspended for the first 5 games of the following season. Because Danny was feisty he got blamed by a lot of people, CBS had to rerun the tapes to prove who bit who. Anyhow a lot of sports 'stars' should take anger management classes. I had to get to the bottom of the posts, so sorry about interrupting JM talk.
thank you for the correction - and the headline where "tree bites man".
david is in the same zone as me. i lost three i planted last fall. none in the spring (i do not count those babies from lj).
Did all the rain help this summer?
Zones are very deceiving. Technically, we are only 1/2 zone apart, but my winters are much milder than yours. And Illinois gets a lot of snow and ice storms.
We stay warmer here till Oct. generally. We'll see how it goes this year. People here are complaining it feels like Oct to them already. I'm from NE originaly, so it feels normal to me.
the did rain help a bit and hurt some too - jm do not like wet feet.
dave47 I ordered about 300 bulbs for planting this fall. Fall blooming crocus have arrived and are planted. Haven't planted any others yet. Too hot and sunny still.
the way we get bit up... that's not good
:(
