Coral spot on my Japanese Maple

This year ....out of the blue the leading branch of my japanese maple (atropurpureum) died. I then noticed coral spot at the bottom of the branch which had spread to the base of the tree. It only covers half the width. Will the stems on the other half be Ok or have i lost it?
