Our Labor Day Weekend Surprise

Emerald Hills, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, apparently the quarantine is still in effect. I had so many peaches this summer but when I called a food bank to donate them they couldn't accept them :-( I'm a newbie, does Nor Cal normally have Round Ups during non-quarantine times? Or are we just not as organized as the So Cal folks?

Ok, so my faux pas with the Oompa Loompas . What was the name of the little people in the Wizard of Oz and did they live in nests like JD said? Or am I waaayy off base here :-)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

The little people from the Wizard of Oz were munchkins. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think there's one scene in the film where it shows a few of them sleeping in a birds nest. Hated those flying monkeys !

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

You are right, baby munchkins I think.
~'s!~

Emerald Hills, CA(Zone 9b)

thanks! I'll sleep better now that that mystery has been solved. I wasn't sure if I was misinterpreting your whole comment up there; glad to know I'm not completely clueless :-)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Since this thread originally started out to be about cats, and evolved into munchkins, (and assorted other anomalies...) I wish I had a photo to post of my sister's Munchkin Tabby cat.
There really is a type of cat called a munchkin tabby. They have really short legs but fairly normal sized bodies.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Yes, g-orbit, Northern Ca DG has had good RU's in the past....a couple that I wanted to drive up for.....actually, I've been wondering where some of the N Cal people are lately, been awfully quiet....

Wow, who knew? Well, obviously you did JD.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Cool, huh ? For whatever reason, they're extremely friendly cats.
(No, they don't sleep in bird's nests ! )

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I bet some do JD. : - )
Some of those crows nests are pretty big. Some cougar have been spotted around, not recently, but it's only a matter of time, before the drought drives them down to the houses.
Besides cat's will sleep in the strangest of places. Boxes, baskets, bags, shoes, suitcases, on you, upside down with it's eyes open and tongue hanging out. You can count on them to find the coolest spot in the house during the summer and the warmest in the winter.
Cats are better than alarm clocks. Alarms clocks don' t jump on your stomach when it's time to get up and feed them breakfast. Cats are better than sleeping pills when they purr you to sleep. Cat's have the ability to turn normally sane individuals into their personal attendants.
What's not to love. It all comes back in a circle to cats. Having fun messing with your cat? Make a circle out of yarn on the floor. Wait and see how long it is before the cat investigates it, pokes it with a paw, sniffs it, and then falls asleep inside the circle. I also love the old cat inside the paper bag toy. : - )
I didn't know that's why you all up north weren't having RU's. How long has that been going on?
JD, munchkins are pretty neat cats alright.
How's Rocky doing ~'spin!~?
Waiting for update!

Wow, looks like a cross between a cat and a chihuahua....
The apple moth debacle has been going on for the past 3 years that I know of. There was a RU up this way a couple of years ago, but it got really complicated with who could and who couldn't bring plants. I couldn't go anyway, but it was enlightening to watch the correspondence.

I found a brick road, but it's not yellow.

Ima, there's always a food RU!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

How about a food and photo round up with a seed exchange?
DP, you got yellow spray chalk? Or that stuff they use for paint guns? I betcha we could turn that brick road yellow! (and it would wash off with the first rain) LOL! Just joking, it looks like a really nice tree lined, shady road. : - )
So did you follow it anyway?

Evidently he has...and got lost...he hasn't posted since ! lol

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I think he's in AZ. Somebody has a birthday coming up. : - )

Here's two from one of OK's Native Sons.

BTW, did you know that Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) once rented a cat for the summer. It may have come with the house, but I understand he enjoyed the cats company.

Rocky is fine this morning, playing soccer with himself with a 1.5" ball (with noisemaker inside, a cat toy). His coordination has improved over two weeks!

Yesterday we went down to San Diego to see the Body Worlds exhibit and were gone from the house ten hours... the longest by at least twice that Rocky has been alone since adopting us. WELL! Was he miffed! All last evening he was attacking us and *biting* -- I know that is a funny mental picture, but he was quite serious about it AND he has sharp teeth. Our previous cats would sulk but not be aggressive and only after multi-day vacations (or when they saw me packing suitcases, which they recognized for what they meant).

I held him and made him accept some pets a couple times last night (dodging the mandibles), and it seems he is over his pique today. Whew! He is going to have to learn to be a little more flexible than that! My DH was NOT amused.

~'s!~ Here is the cutest picture, taken Tuesday (before the snit-fit).

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Aww...that is cute. I would think a spray bottle of water on hand for when he bites would do the trick. Not like our Kitsel, who in the past has been a very serious biter.....he'd already acquired some serious anger issues before arriving here.....

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

That'll teach you for taking off for ten hours without HIS approval !

When I go anywhere overnight, I come home to dry cat food all over the kitchen floor and cat litter flung all over the back service porch.

Am I owned or what ?

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

My 3 spoiled brats will need to fend for themselves for 2 nights in October. I'm going to have to leave the cat door open, so I'll need to close up the house so the "strangers" can't get in and pee on my new couch. My cats will have their food and water in the enclosed patio inside the cat door.
I know I'm gonna hear about it when we get back.....

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

LOL ! Yes, you'll hear about it allright !

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

We all have our masters. You should deal with the beak on a macaw when she's been turfed out of her palace for fire evac. Yikes! Or an Amazon who sees a shadow on the wall while she's giving you a smooch - what's the nearest thing to grab? I'll show you my scars if you show me yours! LOL

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

A spray bottle of water might do the trick, but it's not always at hand and there are other drawbacks as well. I've never used one because I have hardwood floors I don't want to spray with water. Just blow in the kitty's face when he starts biting. It can't hurt him, it will deter him, and you won't have to clean up afterwards.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

I keep a spray bottle on the table for when one of the other cats likes to claw the rugs, but, yeah, he does it anyway...lol....if we'd blown in Kitsel's, face we would have lost a nose. We seriously didn't think we'd be able to deal with him, but he's pretty good now. I'd never before encountered a cat who would viciously attack.

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

My DB/SIL had a cat that would hurl herself at you about thigh level with claws out (and I think teeth too)... just for the heck of it. I'm not sure if Maxine had anger issues or was just showing who was the boss. But she wasn't much of a lap-cat either, so it was somewhat in character. Whereas with Rocky, it was a 180-degree turn-about from purring cuddling kitten to Attack Cat!

Fortunately we got the sweet one back today!

I will tell my husband about blowing in the face. He actually took hold of the kitten's *neck* after Rocky drew blood on his arm! I had to jump up and separate them! I have an awful lot of papers/magazines/books around that might be endangered by the squirt bottle. Maybe it won't happen again... yeah, right, mom.

~'s!~

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

You know, I don't have the biting problems. I always tell my cats when I have to go away. Since then, they don't do destructive things.
Although I did have to wash my pillows because one cat thought her dinner was late, and when I got up to go pee, so did she, all over my pillows. Neither of us was happy that night.
My cats always get mad at me when I'm not home. They ignore me, which is okay, since I have to unpack. They love climbing and smelling the suitcases. They get over it in a day or two.
Squirt bottle works great when discouraging the cats from trying to eat the 'keets, or climbing on the table or counter tops. I can't wait to get rid of our carpets and get hardwood floors. Maybe we can afford it next year. I think I'll have extra coat of lacquer put down, just to help with those H20 spills.
Glad Rocky didn't damage your DH any more.
I'll be happy to show you some of my critter scars. Got one on my thigh from being bit by a wolf. Better than having the wolf kill my dog though. LOL! I had insurance, the dog didn't.
Got to say from experience though, parrot bites hurt worse than anything, except monkey bites and people bites.
Rocky is still a baby, and you rocked his world when he thought you abandoned him. Just love him up and let him know you love him, and he'll continue to be too cute! : - )

Yes, you are right about him thinking himself abandoned. I think he will be better with shorter times along leading up to longer. We're taking him with us to visit Blooms. Which I still have to pack for!

Did I mention he plays fetch? Here he is bringing me the mouse to throw.

One of my previous cats played fetch with one of those practice golf balls with the holes in it. We lived in a small apartment. She'd bring the ball to me in bed, and I'd throw it against the bedroom wall, where it would bounce nicely on the hardwood floors all the way out to the tiny living room & sometimes even into the infinitesimal kitchen. This was a great game for us, until she decided that whenever the sky started to get the least bit light in the morning, it was time to play the game. She'd sit on the foot of the bed and drop the ball on the floor; it would bounce around in the bedroom about 90 times, making all kinds of wonderful noise. Then she'd do it again and continue to bounce it until I got up. After a few days of this, I decided I had to hide the ball at night if I was ever going to sleep past dawn. "Cats have no personality"......riiiiiight......

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Just like they can't be trained. LOL!
I think it depends on the trainer and trainee. My cat Griselda, has me trained to feed her when she wakes me up by jumping on my tummy. I get it!
LOL!
Glad Rocky is learning new tricks. Just wait til you find him hanging from the ceiling. Don't worry, he'll find a way to get there!
Enjoy! They are only babies for such a short time.
