how now brown clematis

Why does the bottom tend to do this? I have several varieties and unless recently planted- they tend to brown on the bottom.

Clematis are a bit finicky in that they want good sun, but cool roots, That is why you so often see them nestled more to the east side of trees. The ones on your arbor have overplantings and the arbor to shade the roots and help keep them cool.

I have lots of sweet autumn and I pull them out to get rid of them. they come back every year and the seeds gets all over the place. They are in bloom right now and are very pretty. i would prune it back and mulch heavy for the cold weather. Bellieg
