I like green but......

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

getting pretty fed up with my brown grass. I am seriously thinking of digging it all up, it's mainly weeds anyway, and planting an evergreen clover. Is there such a thing over here - evergreen I mean!! Would appreciate thoughts on this and where would I buy the seed in bulk. Thanks!

Louisa, the best bet would be to call the county Cooperative Extension. They would have information on what seeds are available in your county, where to get them and what will do well. I think most clovers are evergreen, at least the ones we have seem to stay green under the snow. We have lots of clover and bird's foot trefoil in our lawn - looks good under water and in dry years as well.

Some people actually plant creeping charlie, too. We have quite a bit of it, and I don't hate it so much. If I were to worry myself about what stuff (other than grass) is in my lawn, I would be a basket case!

Thanks Kathleen, why didn't I think of our local extension office!!! Kim what is creeping charlie - is it evergreen?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

the only reason I would worry about clover is the bees that would be in there constantly.

Louisa, there is a rye-type grass that is as green as a brand new dollar bill all winter! I'm sure it is a perennial rye of some kind. Sounds like you are looking for a grass somewhere along that line. (And yes, it will stay green in VA.) I'll check more into it , k?

tig I have lots of bees now - can't imagine having thousands more - I can see how that might be a problem - unless I put a huge pot of jam in one corner of the garden and work on the other three corners...lol!!

Hiya Shoe - that does sound encouraging!! So why isn't this grass sown all the time then? Are you telling me it is green all year round? I have noticed people's lawns going brown in the summer and green in the winter. And others where it's green in the summer and brown in the winter - like here!! In fact, that is the one thing I find I don't like about this area - everything goes brown in the winter. I must mention, it's the ONLY thing I don't like. Otherwise, it's perfect in every way :-)

Hi,

The rye type is winter rye grass and it will die out in spring when the weather warms up and should return the next winter...if not buy some more seeds for they are inexpensive!

Hope this helps!

Can I be contraversial?

Artificial turf stays green the whole time and never needs mowing. Just a couple of years ago they bought out various colours too which they hoped might take off in GB ... well they were wrong we're still fairly traditional in this part of the world.

lol......Thanks but no thanks Baa!! Yuk!! Thanks Prissy - I remember having this conversation before with Dave and others regarding green grass all year round. According to Shoe, rye stays green all the time. Now Prissy, you say it dies back. So I'm none the wiser...help!! That's why I think I will plant clover!!

Hey Louisa,
If you read her post again it says stays green all winter...that is what winter rye is...Sorry this won't help you! I do remember there is a summer/winter mix of grass you can buy but sorry to say I don't know where...

Hope you find something!

Thanks prissy for your help :-)

Baa -- Artificial turf, LOL! It's bad enough having to mow the lawn so much in the warm months; I can't imagine having to sweep it!

Sweeping is good for your heart GW! LOL I should know I've swept miles of concrete in the farm yard and stables over the years. It tones up the back and arm muscles and is a great workout. Beats jumping up and down in tight lycra gear to pounding music anyday ;)

Hehehe, I never understood all this expensive exercise stuff - just get a few cows and see if you don't get a lot of exercize. Some pricey spa out west (probably CA) was even handing out pitch forks for one of their "routines." Heck, I could give them the same experience with real hay thrown in for nothing!

Actually, the problem with green cement is that you have to keep painting it, and artificial turf apparently engenders someing called 'turf-toe.' My lovely natural lawn (read weedy!) stays green all by itself, the dandelions, tiny asters, yarrow, ground ivy (creeping charlie, Gill over the ground, Glechoma hederacae) and other assorted ground covers are green year around. But please, no weed and feed, or it will all be dirt!!

(Zone 4a)

anyone know how to rid a lawn of creeping charlie? I don't like weed and feed because of pets and nature, but we are being over run!
