I wonder if this young one will be mature enough for migration.

This is usually the youngest age I see at this time of the year.

There were lots of gallinules out on the pads practicing the local sport of "pad flippin". Both young ones

and older ones

I never knew gallinule ate veggies till I saw them eating some today. This youngster likes hycinth blossoms.

I have always thought of lotus as being a nuisance. It stops up all the channels in late summer. Of course the gallinules walk on and flip the pads to find food. I only see gallinules were there are lotus pads. I never knew they also eat the seed heads. Here is a juvenile tearing apart one of the seed heads.

This adult saw the younger one on the seed pod and thought he needed to prove who was in charge.

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

With millions of seedpods available the adult decided he had to chase the young one away and claim the pod the younger one had been eating.

There was a shortage of anhinga, Little Blue Herons and Ibis today. I did not see any alligators and few turtles. But today was still productive and enjoyable. It apears the gallinules will survive and return next year. There seemed to be a good number of juveniles to maintain the species.

I am sure there is lots going on in our area but have been taking advantage of the soft ground and cool days to work in the yard. While outside I have enjoyed the American Goldfinches on the Sunflowers...they sure enjoy them!

Handsome Catbird nanny!

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

Great shots rose, I have some Goldfinches, but haven't seen any julies, yet.

nanny, I have catbirds, too, I see them ofter eating at my peanut delight suet feeder.

Pretty ducks, kniph, I went to an area lake a few days ago and got snaps of Canada Geese, Mallards and a Great Egret. The male mallards don't have their full colors yet, just a tad of green as a crown.. From what Resin said, I'm going back and get pics as they change into their pretty plumage colors. They ought to be decked out by mid October.

Sweet little Titmouse, duc.

Oh nanny, are you starting another list? Well done on the new Warbler.

Rose, those shots are just gorgeous. I can see why you're enthralled by them.

Knip, what beautiful lighting in your duck photo. I see the one with the extravagantly coiffed head is there.

Here's a Pink-eared Duck from down the swamp a couple of days ago.
