I am considering planting two different native small trees - both turn out to be dioecious. These are the American Smoke Tree and the American Fringe Tree. I am not sure if that means that I need to plant both a male and a female somewhere on my property or whether I can just choose which one I would like to plant. . .
Dioecious Trees
If you want them to produce fruit/seed then you will need to get a male and female of each tree, but if you're not worried about that then you can just plant one.
The male American Smoke tree is said to be showier than the female. http://www.treetrail.net/american_smoketree.html
The male and female of the American Fringe tree are beautiful, with favor given slightly to the male. http://www.herbs2000.com/herbs/herbs_fringe_tree.htm
Sometimes it is difficult to buy a small tree knowing if you are getting male or female. Ask at the nursery where you are buying them. You only need a male and a female plant when you want to get fruit.
Thank you very much. That is what I suspected. I do have an excellent natives nursery locally and will enlist their help in selecting the trees of the correct gender.
