Need suggestions for Zone 9 bushes

Fresno, CA

I'm in Fresno, CA. I've taken out my front lawn and am in the process of converting from sprinklers to drip. As fall approaches, I'm planning new plantings so that I can go into action as soon as the weather cools down.

My question is about the typical suburban (formerly) grass strip between sidewalk and curb. A lovely mature pistache tree sits in the middle. The orientation is east-west, so it gets a fair amount of sun. A row of miniature roses on the house side of the sidewalk is doing very well in these conditions.

I'd like to put in three smallish attractive bushes on either side of the driveway and at the far end of the strip. By this I mean something that stays green all year and can be avoided by people getting in and out of cars at the curb. I like unusual plants and am determined not to let my landscaping look like every street divider strip in Fresno, which means not Raphiolepsis or junipers!

I would really appreciate any suggestions anyone might have. Thank you very much!
