Cottage Garden Seed Swap and Chat #39

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OH -- that is an English Marigold, [citrus cocktail] with the looks of a tiny spider hiding in there....

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Very nice shot. Beautiful yellow.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

yes, the color is very vibrant... the plant gets a little unruly if they are not 'pruned'
and WOW to they reseed!! I cleaned up that bed today...

it was about twice as wide before the 'pruning' of spent flower heads... and ALL of them grew from last years seeds. and I probably pulled 3x's as many out.

Neat pic and beautiful flower be d there. : )

Oh ya that needs to stay up as a sticky and dependign on what gets added that spreadsheet cna grow even bigger this year. Godo tool very useful.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

thansk Ella... here is the other end [east] of the bed .... those are the Yvonne SAlvias .... then yellow 4-O'cllocks with Magenta next to that... the yellows got tall this year. I htink the Yvonnes look a bit nappy as they didn't get too much sun. I had my son pull out some large sun flowers that were in front of them.

need to do some serious seed collecting in that area, and quickly.

tcs did I show you a pic of the Yvonne's from you? Mine are just beginning to come into their own. I have to get an updated photo. Too bad they'll be killed by frost within a month, I'll be sad to see them go. All your gardens look great btw. : )

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

No meredith... I have not seen yours.

>>All your gardens look great btw. : )

Thanks ... some looked better last year. The dry summer and the neighbors dog did a lot of my plants in this year.
He likes to trample things....

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

ridesredmule, i wanted a start of the starfish, please...............til someone said sumtin bout a smell???

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Oh man I'd die if a neighbors dog trampled my gardens. I'd call the dog officer!

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

You can have it. I didn't think it was that bad. Worth having for the bloom.
Still want it? You are welcome to a piece, got plenty. Please do.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

So, I'll need some advice for next year. What are some of your favorite plants to put with Salvia. I have two that I liked this year, and hope to get more, plus a mexican bush sage, need some other kinds of flowers/textures in there I'm thinking...

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

ridesredmule, i's gonna be brave and go fer it!!! i woulds loves to have a piece or two? kin always git a clothespin fer me nose! thanky so much!

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Such a brave girl, but you are going to love it.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Hey Neal -- I can not find my "red Flax"
I was out there this morning and all i could find was Blue.... as i recall, they do have different looking foliage.

Hopefully some one will have seeds to share.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

The red flax tcs has greener foliage looking like true leaves but small and the blue is a frosty green kind of catcus looking, I'm just going to send for some red flax seeds if someone does have them it probably won't be many to go around they seem to be so scarce.

I have so many seed sitting around I got some empty avon boxes from my neighbor that sells avon to put my cups in to keep the kittys out lol When I go to clean them there just doesn't seem to be enough but sitting aroud in those cups you would think I would have more than a store! lol

tcs, that citrus cocktail really looks nice I think I have that one in my calandulas it is a calandula isn't it? I know I have radio and a few others I love the way they reseed! Your pictures look really nice! And you figured your macro out that is so wonderful that's the thing to have on a camera! I bought some other calendula seeds last year but never got them planted maybe next year they do tend to take over. I love that Pygmy Agastache and it smells like bubble gum that is cool didn't know that does it reseed or was this the first year to plant it. I had some Apache Sunset and guess I lost it from the ice storm I blame everything on that lol I can't find it anywhere. I ordered some Agastache Summer Love from Star can't wait to get those they are beautiful!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

>>calandula isn't it? I know I have radio and a few others I love the way they reseed!

yes, it is... and i HATE the way they reseed.... everywhere
maybe because the bed they are in is too narrow... say if i had a big field for them, that wouldn't be so bad.
but yes, they are very pretty blooms. Last year, when i pulled the plants out in early november, [zone5] they were still blooming!! hardy lil buggers they are.

If you buy Red Flax... let me know.. .I'd like more, and i'll put them in a place where i can find them again.

I'll go out again and see if i can't locate them with your description... I really only saw one foliage, and i'm thinking they are the Blue.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I'll let you know when I do get some more red flax tcs :) I am going to send for some.

I just let the calendulas fill in spaces that are empty sometimes they get out of control and never notice them until they start blooming lol I have a space by the road that has soapwort, penstemon and irises when they are done blooming the calendula kicks in it's quite a space out front they put on quite a show in between my Avalanche grasses there all summer. Then I have some that reseed in between the ragged robin and malteze cross, white lace flower and cherry bells campanula when they quit blooming the calendulas are going strong :)

Star, I was thinking of you yesterday I went thru two gardens cutting and digging out the taller than me weeds out and going thru all those weeds I was watching for snakes! lol It took almost all day and I had a neighbor helping me I started potting up what plants I could find to put in the side yard later it was such a mess :( My middle bed is like two times the width of my house just made me sick all of the plants I had out there and couldn't find all of them :( My New England asters are just beautiful in there they can hold their own because they are as tall as the weeds were almost lol I'm going to mow over those beds and just hope that some of the plants come back next year in the spring so I can dig the ones I missed I've got my fingers crossed anyway it's the only thing I can do is wait and hope, it's like three years of seed swaps and trades out there! I had one sedum that I thought I lost from La and it was like two foot tall trying to reach for the sun lol

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Lebug.. LOL.. I been thinkign of ya all too each tiem I go out back to try adn gather mroe stems from that Monarda. Went back ther e the other day and heard something and I just froze cuz didn't knwo if it was baby rattler or somethign else makign noise.

I woudl back up and it woudl be quiet, take a step forard and would hear it. Ende dup walkign aroudn the other way to the back through the stickers and itchy bushes. determined to get some of them seed s for you guys , then had a good scream. Was checkign the stems and grabbe d oen and her eit had this green spider with like rust orange weird design on it s back. Now I have load s of spider s here, sopider s are good, they yoru friend and eat the bad bugs, but have never ad a green oen before and as cool as it looked it scare d me and I usually dotn run from spiders.

grabbe d me another stem and race d back in to hosu e with it to let it dry. Finalyl figrue d out how to get the seed otu of it, well the dust that is seed. Man I hate teeny eeny seed. It gona nhave a tiny bit of chaff in it to cuz The seed s so tiny i cant even try and blow it off the plate or woudl los ethe seeds.

Polkton, NC(Zone 7b)

I don't like those teeny eeny seeds either Starlight. When I'm cleaning seeds I know that I'm always just a cough away from a disaster. I learned that the hard way.
One of my cats got in the other day while I was feeding them. She had never been in the house before and is a little wild too. I knew she was headed for the living room and all those stacks of paper plates, and sure enough when she saw me coming she started trying to climbed anything that was taller than her. My teeth were clenched so tight I think I cracked a few. I finally got her out but she managed to take out one stack while sailing over the piano lol. Maybe I should try Lebugs cups instead.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Ive got some Ageratum, Pineapples and Eyeball plant that will all have chaff. I'll list them that way so you'll know. The choice is, offer just a few seeds or lots per packet but with chaff. I'm choosing with chaff. Can't for the life of me separate those three! All others I've managed, but they're just crazy teensy.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Kelly, do you have edible Pineapple seed? Pineapple Lily? I've got some Pineapple Lilies that I started from seed. This is the 2nd year for them, hoping some will be big enough to bloom next year, although I'm thinking it may take another year for the bulbs to get big enough. That's what piqued my interest, and I've been wondering if any of those burgundy leaved varieties may by chance produce a similar offspring. I want one of those really bad, but they're kinda pricey.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

:) sorry nothing that cool. I think it's helenium aromaticum. Tiny yellow balls. Cute. But tiny!

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

oink, oink! cant wait fer them eyeball seeds, klstuart!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Just got back from the PO mailing some seed envelopes out, and wanted to remind everyone I still have plenty. So if any more piggies need 2X2 or 2X3 seed envelopes, oink away! It's $1.56 postage for a package of 100, and a large letter envelope holds them well. I'm in the address exchange, so just send a self addressed, stamped envelope if you would like some.

Those I've already sent, don't worry about the additional postage, it was close enough :-)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Neal I still haven't goten my SABE out yet, meeting with a new lawyer this afternoon so probably won't get it out until tomorrow, I've always got something going on lol You would think I have a full time job! Well I do with my plants and seeds LOL

Did I tell you I did find the regular baggies at wal mart finally :) They have two craft depts. now, whatever LOL That sure was a relief I was freaking!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Neal, thanks for the reminder. Will get an envie out to you tomorrow.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Neal, sent out an envie this morning.

What number coem s after 21?

None if ya workign with tiny stuff. heheheheh man oh man. soem things get tire d of coutnign and if I have enough doign the pinch or two stuff.

Everytime I do a pinch remind s me of oldtimey days when folks would take a pinch of snuff or tobabbcy to roll cigerettes .

I think I got the crinkelyestestest ( new word). Soem folks can make foil packets to put tiny seed in and it looks all shiney and new and flat and mien so ful of wrinkle s it looks like a babay done playe d with it. Heck even the foil roll don't want to co-operate and coem out straight and rip off easy. LOL

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Star I've got some tiny seeds too and I made some little envies out of waxed paper. I just followed a pattern from one I had in my seed bag and they came out pretty good.

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

Hi all
I have a question? I posted over in seed saving but no response.
I have collected some blackberry Lily seeds, and wish to know the proper way to dry or store them. They look like they would mold if I place them in a regular plastic ziplock.
Any experience or ideas here?
Thanks
Cinda

Edit to say lily

gardengus, I've never saved blackberry seeds before I bet they are small how about putting them on top of a paper towel or just a paper plate maybe? Oh I remember getting those in my teeth before lol They aren't that small are they lol

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

Oh I see my mistake I meant blackberry lily ^_^
Corrected

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Gus.. Let them dry out. They wil shrivel up but they wil be fine. Yoru right you try and back them now and they wil mold big time.

Depending on how much time ya have and how energenic. You cna let fully dry and then open up and get seed out, btu that a pain , so just betetr to let dry. The coatign when plantie d wil desintigrate.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Blackberry lily seeds will dry completely, and still look pretty much the same. That's why there so nice for dried arrangements- those shiny black heads last a long time. Standing upright in a vase is a good way to dry them, but a paper plate or fine woven basket works well too. You can tell when they're dry enough by squeezing one between your fingers- it should crush the black skin into pieces and feel dry inside. If its still leathery, its not dry enough.

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

Thanks , do you pack in plastic or should I put them in paper?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Once they're dry, plastic is fine.

Shepherdsville, KY

Just dropping in to make sure I don't miss nothing.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

I posted this in the plant id forum, but thought I'd pass it by my most learned cottage garden friends, too.

Does anyone know what this is?
