Lea I'm so sorry I didn't answer you yesterday. I just popped in so I wouldn't get behind on the thread but I have been very busy with my little one starting Kindergarten. She's in a half day program and with my work schedule I just barely have enough time to get her ready to go in the afternoon. Then when she gets out and we get home I have to get dinner ready right away and then do homework with her. Having to get her ready and make sure the dog has his walk and still having to go back to work are really cutting in to my gardening time Lol. Seems like the days are getting shorter now!
I won't need any of those seeds but I bet some one else will. : ) My gardens are pretty much full from the last two swaps! Lol Thanks for thinking of me though. I am not sure if I am going to have all my seeds ready for the swap this year. I have been trying to save what I can but I also have a new doggy so he is also giving me less time to get stuff done. Hopefully I'll at least be able to donate some for the swap if nothing else. My growing season seems way behind most everyone's here so I am just beginning to have seeds to save. Lots of stuff is no where near ready yet.
Cottage Garden Seed Swap and Chat #39
Sounds like you are busy Meredith :) You just hang in there and you'll get it down to a routine in no time LOL I remember those busy days and don't miss them at all LOL
Wonderful to see old and new piggies - welcome all :)
And wishing PamSue a belated happy birthday - hope things go well for your DH's eyes.

Bluespiral, I am just so glad to be out in the morning looking for seeds around here
and finding plants I didn't even notice before. Learning more every day. I love this
retiremnt , gives me time for my plants and new plants too. I love it, Thanks.
Charleen
If any interest in this yellow sweetpea-like vine, I have tons of seed to share.
This vine will take over quick in the summer so would be great to use on an arbor or privacy fence. Has a light evening fragrance and hummers & butterflies love the blooms. Flowers are a very pretty sunshine yellow.
Seeds are very easy to germinate.....you can even take cuttings from vine that will root quick to share with friends.
I agree a nice vine, I received seeds last year and have a couple growing in a pot on a trellis .
Do you know the name?
Hahahahahah just catchign reading up while i have puter before thunder and storms come again and laughign abotu the pie pans. Now I have some and sittign her e wondering all what in the world cna go wrong while I woudl be tryign to do that to chas e the snakes. Cuz surley somethign impossible cna and would happen. LOL Disaster follwo s me wherever I go heheheh
I ain't goign into the one section til it gets alot cooler, the snake s are on the mov e here and I have rattler s that have a path they run each year for migration and ain't no way I gonan go into that area.
The yellow flower, ya ther e oaks back there, but the one i had otu front last year didn't coem back and this is the only plant I have seen so not sur e if it that oen that liek oaks or not.
Ok, who knows iff ther e a way to tell the differenc e between Echiancea seed and rudbeckia seed? I had both sittign on my car hood on napkins tryign to see fi I coudl find seed and darn storm winds kicke d up and ble w them all together so now I don't which is which. They may end up being mystery seed.
Off hand is anybody gonan want soem grancy grey beard seeds. ha d picke d some, but befor e goign back to get more figur e would see if ther e anybody even interested.
Cannagirl thta is apretty vine. Ya don't see to many yellow vines. Is that the Vigna angulais bean the yellow corkscew vine?
I do, I'd like some. Mine didn't make any. Do you think anyone wants Poke Berries. I got Jillions of them around here. They make a really pretty purple stain on my donkey's noses. Don't ask me I don't know what is going on in those goofy little heads. But they do get berry juice on their noses.
I know about those snakes, I saw one and my husband saw one the other day. I don't kill them but I stay out of their way.

Ella, the echinacea seed is much fatter and lighter color than rudbeckia.
Just got to my folks in NC today. Was thinking maybe I could find some seeds of their wildflowers, but of course most bloomed in the spring and their seeds long gone. Will have another look later on after some sleep. It doesn't help to get up at 3:30 am to catch a plane.
Cannagirl I sure would like some of those seeds too. I haven't seen that one before.
Ella my Ma brought me 5 or 10 grancey greybeards so I can send a few more on your way if you need them for the swap.

Hey ladies, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in castor bean seeds? My plants are setting tons of them and I will collect them if people are interested in them, otherwise I will only collect what I want for next year.
I love the plants because they keep the rabbits away from my garden! And they look so tropical, but they are poisionous, so if you have small children or other critters that like to chew on anything available you might want to think twice. My 3 year old knows not to touch and our pet bunnies stay away from them.
Lea, I found Coleus and Salvia to be very happy under lights. Neither seem to be major bug magnets either.
Cannagirl, I like that vine!
Ella, I think Rudbeckia seeds are much smaller than Echies. Seems the Echinacea seeds are more long and pointy.
Carolyn, YES on those Castor beans! Those are popular among cottage gardeners, and mine aren't doing well this year, so I know I'll want some fresh seed.
Rudbeckia seeds are way smaller, like tiny skinny black grains of rice... Echinacea seeds are corky looking, pointed at one end, ribbed cone shape that reminds me a little of a closed-up paper umbrella (the kind you'd find in any drink served in a pineapple).
Has anybody had luck repelling voles with castor beans? They are remarkable plants -- can't believe anything grows that big in 1 summer.
They are a beautiful plant but deadly.have to watch puppy dogs and not let them eat any seed.
did You notice how many beautiful plants are deadly? Amazing!!
i really dont think they work on moles and voles. Cats do though.
Many thanks to anyone who sent in Tithonia last year! I had no idea... I just tried pulling apart the seed heads for the first time myself... ouch! Those guys are seriously painful (yes, I was too lazy to get my gloves... at first anyway). Well, now I have lots of Tithonia, and some tenderized thumbs.
Critter I've grown the castor bean plants for the last three years and they have no effect on the moles or voles. Right now I have one in my nectar garden and there is a mole tunneling about two feet away from it :) If I ever get my shade garden in shape I need more shade they would be great fast growing plants to shade your hosta lol
Oh Kistuart I just had a bad flashback LOL I didn't get any planted this year.
What about The clematis that sends youngsters out everywhere. I have plenty of those.
Even in the pasture.
Klstaurt.. LOL Ya poor thing. I think I have a coupel of happy face bandaids left if ya wanna put them on your fingers. ; )
I was happy today. I have this passion flower that blooms and feeds my butterflies that I allow to grow wild. Well right otu the back door even in the tall grass it made about 6 or 7 fruits. Last year I gathere d fruits when they had turne d from green to yellow and had to spend forever tryign to get each seed out of its googy sack. Well I been lettign this sit on the ground and went and looek dot day and some had turne d yellow and was all shriveld up I thought fudge soem critter doen ate the seeds all ready.
I picked up the collapsed pods and looek din side, and man oh man did the happy dance. Last year I notice d almost mircroscopic bugs in the bugs, and whatevr they are they ate al the gooey mess off and left the seeds. Was great all I had to do was dump the seed sout of the pod, bring in wash off and put on plate to dry. Was easy peasy as can be. I so happy. Gathere d the pod s that ha d opene d today and wil keep checkign everyday now to get the rest of the seeds form the othe rfruits.
oink, oink.......see, i'm starting all ready!!! ......cannagirl, kin ya put me down for some of those vine seeds. this season I seemed particularly in love with all vines!
please, please save some hiacinth bean seeds and castor bean fer me!!!
I have plenty of Hyacinth bean seeds to offer too so I'm sure there will be plenty. :-)

Klstuart, I was just looking at the sticky thread you started for seed germination chart and when I click on the link to the spreadsheet it didn't work. Am I doing something wrong or did something happen to the spreadsheet? It was such a great idea and I wanted to see it's progress.
I"ve got to see if I can find a place to start some vines..I had hyacinth bean vines in OK and I love the purple flowers!
(oink!) Star, could I please ask for some seeds of that so pretty passion flower when it's time to ask?? lol
I'm here in TX for a couple of weeks and I've been noticing a pretty vine that has lavender colored flowers on it. I'd almost call it a purple trumpet vine, if there were such a thing! The flowers remind me of very small MG flowers or a trumpet flower. I'm going to try to get some pics once these crazy rains stop and hopefully can find seeds on it before I head back to Iowa.
Meredith, that's strange, it still works for me. Actually, I haven't done anything to it since winter. Was thinking that I should tell admin. to take it off sticky. Just no time this year. It still has all the info we collected last year though! See if this works:

Hang in there, girl.
Best wishes for the health for you and DH.
For this Fall/Winters seed swap.... I'm finding I mostly have "ordinary" [run of the mill] plants growing, or i have forgotten what is what.... So -- I may back out of this swap.... I'll see what i have once i'm done "trimming".
tcs... we got alot of newbies and one survior so far so run of the mill may not be ordinary for them or for other folks.
Don't feel bad, I got soem stuff dryign that I gatehre d was to busy to make a tag and swore to myself I woudl remmebr what they was when they dried.
Well the only thign I rememebr is it was pretty and that they are seeds and they dried. Now if I coudl just remmebr from what plant I got them from would be great. LOL
Terese, don't let that stop you, there's always plenty of demand for things we think of as common.
Did anyone have any luck with Tassel flower this year? I had good germination, but either they got zapped by cold (they sprouted early), or the evil slugs got them. I didn't see anything from those that I direct sowed either. I hope to try those again for sure. Just remembered I lost my Red Flax seedlings too.
That's one thing I still have.... now i just have to remember which foliage is which foliage ... since i have both Red and Blue.
I had harvested A LOT of seed pods a month or so ago, had them on the back table in a plastic deli container.... BIG gust of wind.... most of them were in the grass and i couldn't pick them all up. Hope they are all not shooting up in the Spring.
I'll make a mental note that you need some red seeds -- let me know if you are completely out.
I did get a bunch of Cosmos Limara [sp?] seeds today. Only had 2 seedlings, but they produce a lot of seeds.
My starfish cactus bloomed. I turned it to take a picture, now i got starfish
starts everywhere. anyone want a start so I won't have to have all these littlw pots sitting around. Please send me a d-mail.
don't make me have to pot them all up. Here's my baby. I know it's not a seed but come on , you little
oinkers and get one. Help an old Oinker out.
I'd love to have a start of your cactus if you would be so kind to tell me how to make it happy. Its really beautiful. :)
We are finally getting some rain in NC. So happy that I don't have to drag hose/water jug all over the place.
KLStuart, your list is really nice. I was able to see it fine and saved it to favorites for my own reference. I am going to have to go back to the other piggy swaps I missed just to glean all the pearls there. I really learned a lot on my first piggy swap.
Glad you like it! If anyone else finds it useful, you might want to bookmark it. When we started it last fall and had admin. 'sticky' it, they mentioned that it needed to be kept up. Well, I'm going to let them know that it's pretty much done being maintained for the time being. I'm going to be swamped this fall, and I'm happy with it the way it is. So.. it will still be there, but they may 'unsticky' it.
ridesredmule, I noticed you didn't mention the...um...fragrance, LOL. Such a cool looking bloom! They don't even look real! There was one of those growing in the showroom of the campus greenhouse when I was in college. It was in a huge pot, with a tall cactus (nearly to the ceiling), growing as sort of a ground cover plant to cascade over the sides of the pot. When it bloomed, we typically would smell it before realizing it was blooming (and thinking there was a dead rodent somewhere, lol).
I have his one in the kitchen. We have an on-going mouse problem so I didn't notice it smelling.
But it does attract flies. This is second day and bloom is still open. The smell fades, if you
would like a piece, would be glad to send it. It is a pretty plant. I had to repot what was left in the pot to
a larger one. The brach that had the bloom broke off too. I was so upset.
Neal, I had a few seeds left from year before last from my Tassel flower but didn't get them planted and didn't get my red flax planted for this year either :( I put compost down for my red flax to reseed last year and didn't collect seeds but they didn't.
I am in need of Knapweed seeds, I have a big plant in my nectar garden and thought I saved seeds from it but can't find them anywhere I wanted to plant some in the field that's one plant the weeds won't take over so if anyone has Knapweed seeds I really really want seeds to it for the swap lol For anyone that doesn't know me I like weeds just as well as regular flowers LOL
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/110419/
I think we may get a shower today so I need to get out there and get some seeds! lol I found one seed head on my neighbor's dahlia again Neal so I'm goin to get it this morning and hang it for a while lol Not that we have had any rain for it to be wet all we have had here lately is heavy dew. I'm waiting on disanthus seeds for everyone but it is taking them forever to ripen on the plants I just hope they make it before it gets too cold! Star you get first dibs :) I'm so sorry you lost your seeds!
I have found with Flax... they do just fine with being direct sown in the spring. I did WS a few reds, and they didnt look as good as the direct sown ones... but it was quite dry this year too. so that may have been a factor.
kl I figured it out! Thanks, I wasn't signed in that was my problem. I don't think you should ask to take it down. It's not like the info that you already have changes. Plus when our swap is finished everyone is going to be needing all that wonderful info. If you want I can get you some more plants to list. I kept records of everything I started this year, amount of time to germination and on some of them, I remembered to make note of when they began to flower. I also took pictures of all the first flowers when they opened so I can go through my picture files for ones I forgot to mark down. I didn't want to give any info until I was sure of it myself, I can put it all in the same format you have and then you could just copy and paste it. Of course it would be something I'd work on over the next few months, but I could just send a few at a time, as I finish them, if you want.
Oh, how efficent. Did Great.
