Perhaps these will help you get started.

I have a couple that have been planted at the base of a live oak for the last 7 or 8 years. They are on the East side, get some dappled sunlight and a little early morning sun. They are doing fine there and even bloom for me. All I ever do is hit them with a little liquid feed when I do the hostas.

I had one of each, they have multiplied a bit over the years. You are in the same zone as I am 8b/9a so they should do fine with a little shelter. I do not cover mine in the winter, the tree protects them from frost.

A good way to start a Bromeliad Garden is to visit friends who grow Bromeliads, and get cuttings!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Coming to see you Dave....grin

Keaau, HI

Certainly Jean! The Bromeliad Garden is way over-grown.

I received all of my Bromeliads from friends, and by trading. I didn't buy any of them.

Awww, Dave, that thing is just too pretty....I am thinking of doing some serious revamping around here....this winter is gonna be busy ....grin

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Metro I am intriged with your job, do you do it for a living and work for someone else? Love the Bromelaid, bet that wouldn't grow here. Send some pictures out your back door of Hawaii I always wanted to visit there.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

dumb question...what's a bromelaid?

Ok so I am a retarded witch, please forgive me

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Think of a pineapple. It is a member of the bromeliad family. They all have the stiff leaves and sharp edges like a pineapple top does. The pineapple is the fruit. Most bromeliads bloom some sort of flower. Check out the links in my first response here

hhmmmm...more plants for the collection....
plotting where to put them already
LOL

Keaau, HI

Hey Flowers, I'm a Botanical / Biological Consultant (taking plant & animal inventories and locating Listed Endangered species). As the work is not that steady, I do odd jobs around the neighborhood (construction and gardening / landscaping). Just for fun I work with a couple non-profits.

I'll post some photos on the Gypsy Rebel thread. Lets let Bromeliad_Fan enjoy learning about Bromeliad Gardening.

Step one: Grow Bromeliads as Epiphytes or in Organic Growing Medium, not mineral based soil (unless it's a Pineapple).

Step two: Don't fertilize Bromeliads (unless it's a Pineapple)

maybe I shouldn't have come to this website....now I want bromelaids to grow too!!!!

Keaau, HI

Hey Trina, everyone should grow Bromeliads!

When growing Bromeliads as houseplants, keep the pitcher of the Bromeliad filled with water (if it's the type that will fill with water).

An easy to make, all around growing medium for Bromeliads is a mixture of small rocks and tree bark chips.

can't do metro, they don't sell them here at least nowhere I've seen. There ya go another part time job for you until the real job gets better.Sell Bromeliads

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

now ya did it Dave...a plant that just needs rocks, bark and water, I'm hooked

Now where do I find bromelaids in my area and where'd I put that checkbook?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Probably only find Bromeliads in places that carry mostly houseplants as that is what you would have to grow them as there....some nurseries may have them in their houseplant section

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Bromelaids thats a funny word....I don't think our local nurseries carry anything like that, I had to go online to get a jade tree,

When I asked the lady at the nursery if they had any she looked at me like I was retarded and said she had never heard of such a plant

How does one NOT know what a jade plant is

oohoohh I have a question for dave, oh Dave where for art thou?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Dave is 4 or 5 hours behind us Trina...it is 2 or 3 in the morning in Keaau.

Keaau, HI

Good morning everyone!

What's the question Trina?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Aloha kakahaika, Dave. How are you today? I think Trina has left the site for a while.

Keaau, HI

Doing well Jean! And yourself?

May have to work today; if not Mushroom, Caper, Garlic Sauce will be in the works. I won't forget the Chilies!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Cool. sounds yummy. I have got to get back outside, my break has turned into a long lunch hour plus....grin

Doing well Dave. DHJim was just teaching me a rude Hawai'ian word....shame on him....grin

Keaau, HI

Rude Hawaiian word. What's that? Often the translation gets erred from the original Hawaiian meaning. There generally weren't disrespectful words in Hawaiian language.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

well metro you could cuss us all and we wouldn't know it lol What do you call your spoken language for Hawaii? How do you say good bye?

Keaau, HI

Good bye would be: a hui hou. Literally meaning: "until we meet again".

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Making up my own little phrase dictionary. I will need it when we get it together to come see you...grin

Keaau, HI

Learning another's language and customs is key to fitting in.

Never make any bad remarks about poi, and raw dried fish with seaweed!

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Do you live in a grass hut and watch hula dancers all day lol Moon we will split the ticket for the trip.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Cool....grin

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

thats the most tranquil and peaceful place I can imagine and the people are always happy. I watch too much TV lol

Keaau, HI

Hey Flowers, life is pretty standard here as anywhere else. I do live in a small farmhouse in a rainforest, but have to work to make ends meet.

Although the climate is nice here, I don't get to spend the day in a grass hut watching hula dancers all day; any more than you get to spend the day in a sod house chewing hog mauls!

I work at least as hard as most people, and I live on less money / resources / energy, than the general population.
I produce a lot of food & raise rare plants. I produce very little trash / waste.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Dave for President!

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Sorry Metro, gonna have to do more reading and less talking on here. Didn't mean to hit your sensitive side. I have total respect for what you do and your culture Don't let a little mountain lady dampen your spirts.

Keaau, HI

No offense taken Flowers.

Life is pretty much the same in Hawai'i as anywhere. Don't believe the tourist brochures, they just depict what is at a hotel or resort. Usually with foreign plants and construction.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Metrosideros, I never believe those brochures completely people just couldn't live that lavishly all the time lol Besides without good folks like you making a difference the tourist would have nothing to see or do. I do enjoy hearing stories from other countries its like a vacation without having to go anywhere.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

good evening flowers

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Hey Trina, what in the world is going on? Can't leave you guys for a minute lol

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I'm sorry! well no not really go say "hello" if ya get my meaning
