This spring a whole bunch of something started sprouting clumped in one spot. Turns out a critter (I'm thinking chipmunk) buried a whole bunch of shelled sunflower seeds. It was awesome to see them sprouting from the shells. Anyway, I thinned them out and now one has bloomed.

I got a kick out of this carpenter bee and how loaded it was with pollen. I bet it though it hit the jackpot! :D

I also wanted to share how awesome the little edges are of the "center" of this sunflower. What fantastic colors and design.

Oh, and that little honey oakleaf hydrangea is awesome. what a way to brighten the shade

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx evie - first year in need to see how it does over the winter, supposed to be ok here

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Bill is your caryopteris the variegated one? I think that is 'Summer Sorbet'. How do you like it? I think I need that one. I have the 'Worcester Gold' that is only so so and the 'Sunshine Blue' golden foliage one that I like very much. Been thinking of replacing the WG with the variegated one. Allison had a nice pic of it too. Opinions please?

Victor that hibiscus is so pretty in every single pic you post of it. Rozanne just never stops once it starts 'till frost. Mine has become too big for it's location and is trying to take over the world. I will have to move it next spring I think. Love the back shot you posted of it with matching background color. Nice.

Evie what a nice present some little critter left you. The coloring is really pretty. I hope you will be able save a few seeds too. The little bee has a heavy load for sure, I bet he flew a little low all the way home.

Thomaston, CT

Nice photos---love the caryopteris---do not have any, but anything blooming this time of year is welcome. Evie, very nice shots of the sunflower & bee.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

love the crape Victor....

I have summer sorbet... it's slow growing... but nice

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Great pics, everyone!

Pat, I love your ninebarks, yellow foxglove and caryopteris. The sedum is nice, too. Oh, and I also love the Verbena bonariensis. Great plant!

Marilyn, your snowball bush looks great! I've been seeing a lot in bloom around here.

Jen, your Autumn Joy sedum is fabby!

Great guns! That cosmos is a monster, Allison! And that spider sure is creepy! Never seen one quite like it, other than the tarantulas in AZ! I love your Summer Sorbet!

Wonderful ROS bush, Bill! You'd never know there was a nice brass tower underneath your sweet autumn clem! I love your green eyed echi, and your Autumn Joy sedum is as fabby as Jen's. Little Honey oakleaf hydrangea is fantastic!

Victor, your Midnight Wine weigelia leaves are gorgeous!

Evie, love your sunflower shots!

ID forum said it was a type of barn spider.. Randy and I saw it get into it with some type of large flying bug.. looked like a wasp or something... was like one of those videos of when animals attack... it didn't catch it but boy was it violent

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I saw a wasp kill and eat the spider that thought it had cought something in its web

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I wouldn't doubt it... this one was huge... I was shocked to see something like that at night... besides I never saw a wasp that large before

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I wish I had more interest in entimology.
I honestly believe there are so many more different varieties of stinging insects ou there.
We used to have big bumble bees, now they look smaller and the bite
Wasps too.
We had a nest of yellow wasps in the overhang on the house.
When the bugman came he said they had movedinto an old nest of Japanese Brown wasps and killed the Japs.
They seem territorial and follow me when I'm working in the yard. No stings yet.
They are smaller than the traditional yellowjackets we see on fruit at this time of year.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yeah I had something like that last year... chased me across the front lawn.. neighbors must have thought I was nuts

excellent question patti - yes it is yellow/green variegated - ordered 2 from rarefind last year advertised as sunshine blue, i only ended up with 1 as they ran out of them - ordered more this spring from deer resistant plants and the one that was supposed to be sunshine blue is all yellow - which i think is the real deal - sunshine blue should be yellow - i also have a couple with green foliage from hd last year and 2 others from drp that are green/white variegated. will have to go to look and see if it is summer sorbet - regardless of the name i think it is the best one with the green/white called snow something in second followed by sunshine blue then the green ones. i have them all planted together

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

patti you got me to check out the caryopteris - i have these kinds
dark knight - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/8441
snow fairy - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/68422/
sunshine blue from deer resistant plants - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/76392/
and you are correct - summer sorbet - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/137039/
