Perennials and Container Gardening

Just starting. Looking at perennial planting guidance suggesting certain times (Spring, Summer, Fall) as being the best times to plant certain plants. Now with container planting and placing in a controlled environment eg house. Can one plant perennials anytime and have them grow inside a house in container so one does not have to await spring for planting. Assuming that is correct when it becomes the ideal season can one then transplant to the outside? Thanks

Are you talking plants, or are you planning to start things from seed? For plants, in your zone you should be able to plant perennials in the fall if you don't want to wait until spring. If it's something that's really borderline hardy in your area then it might be better to wait until spring, but otherwise I'd say go ahead and plant them in the fall if you want to, lots easier that way than trying to overwinter them indoors. For seeds, read the seed packet--some things can be sown outdoors in the fall too, and the rest you can start indoors during the winter if you want to get a headstart on spring, then plant them out after your last frost date.

Agreed. Only the plants that are not cold hardy in your area would have a problem, and for them, even if you wait you will have to consider what to do with them the following winter.
