Storing bulbs

I have some bulbs I wont to move , some gladiola, some iris , and some day lilys that I wont to move to a different location. Should I replant them now or can I plant them next spring?I wonted to do some work on my flower beds befour I replant them.I have never moved them befour , so any advise will be welcome. from what I've read Mincy is the dormant stage is crucial in blooming. I would dig them now put in bag in fridge, leave until at least end of October then replant. I'm afraid if you wait until spring they most certainly will not bloom. Someone else may have a more proven method but I dug some glad bulbs up about a mo.ago and will plant them again in Oct. we will learn together

Thanks flowers- delight I will do as you say, as a matter of fact I dug some of them up this morning .I am glad you replyed so promptly. Should I just shake the dirt off , or should I rinse them off?

Some bulbs like tulips do need winter chill in order to bloom, but none of the plants you mention have the requirement. I don't know if being in the fridge would be bad for them, but they don't need it. Glads are typically supposed to be planted in the spring since they're a summer blooming bulb so they're totally fine to move in the spring if you want to wait (but assuming they're hardy in your zone, I don't know that it would hurt to transplant them now if you would have normally left them in the ground for the winter anyway). Iris and daylilies I'm pretty sure you can do in either fall or spring, so whatever works best for you ought to be fine.

If you are going to store them for the winter, I would brush off the dirt, but don't wash them off because you want to try and keep them dry. Then store them somewhere cool & dry, and make sure you put them in a box, paper bag, or something along those lines vs a plastic bag that can't breathe. If you have a basement that isn't really damp that would be a fine place for them. That should be fine for the glads & iris, but for daylilies I'm not positive but I don't think you can do that with them, I think you need to get them back in the soil fairly quickly so whenever you decide to dig them up I'd go ahead and move them to their new location.

yeah what she said! If you haven't decided where you want the daylillys to go then I would put the cuttings in a flower pot or container with potting soil and leave out doors untill you decide to plant or give to a friend.

Mincey1, daylilies are not bulb plants, so if you dig them up, please make sure to get as much of the fleshy roots as possible.Just stick them in pots and cover with soil until you are ready to replant them. Cut the leaves nack to about 4 to 6 inches to relieve stress on the plant. They will bounce back just fine in the spring.

Hello everyone! My name is Katrina...speaking of bulbs a friend dug up something called naked lady lillies...I've never heard of them but are there any special planting instructions to put them back in the ground?

First off, get them back into the ground ASAP as they resent being disturbed. add a little bone meal to the soil and mix well as you replant.

cool the garden where I am going to plant them was just fertilized with both blood meal and bone meal because of all the roses! Next question short of shooting it how do I keep my neighbors dog out of my garden! the thing has destroyed nearly $800 in Irises from digging them up...not to mention the damage to the roses and hollyhocks..I've tried all legal measures to get her to tie it up because we do have a leash law but she still wont tie it up

Thanks everyone for your help with my bulbs as well as my day lilies., actually I will most likely plant them back in the same area , but in order. Right now they are no kind of order at all.I started off with hand me down flowers just to enhance one pityfull little bird house and now this area has grown to a large mixture 0f flowers and about 75 bird houses. the bird houses look really good so I would like to put my flowers in order. Trina, do you have animal control in your area? If there is a leash law, you can file a complaint and they will warn her/give her a ticket/impound the dog...had to do it with a neighbor whose dog killed one of our cats....that or wring the dog's neck

we've called, they neighbors across the street called twice after it bit one of their foster kids...it killed my daughters cat in my garden I had to wake up the 4 boys at 6 am on a saturday to help me find all of it so we could clean up the mess before she woke up....the owner and the dog always seem to "disappear" whenever anima control comes around

I expect the dog will disappear before long. People will try to right way and if that doesn't work then tend to take matters into their own hands.

That is a good is a good idea ,since I cant afford to keep feed out for so many I said , OK little fellows I have provided houseing you are welcome to use it free of charge. and lo an behold every one are used in the spring. I spend a lot of my time cleaning them out . I would like to get the flowers out there in better order;. so thanks every one for your help. OH by the way around my home I am know as the Bird Lady.

Okay Trina, time to get serious. How good is your aim? I got one of those super blaster water guns that shoots 30 or 40 feet. Mixed up a couple bottles of cheap hot sauce with some water, added garlic and onion juice to it and a healthy splash of vinegar. Everytime a neighbor's dog shows up, they get one chance to get, then they get soaked....may sound cruel, but eviscerating a cat is by far deserving of some retribution...picked up a gallon jar of cayenne pepper and dusted it around the beds they like to sneak into for a nap....it has cut down considerably on their visits to my house.

Flowers, after finding my poor old cat spread across the back yard, the neighbors are lucky they are still upright and taking sustenance....as for the dogs....not the place to discuss what I want for them.

My aim is dead on I grew up an army brat! I have a blow dart gun. thought about dipping the tips in some crushed Datura flowers...but its not the dogs fault its the owners...I'm gonna use moons idea and see if that works first though

Hopefully after a good soaking, the owner will give the dog a nice scratching session and then rub an eye....evil grin....shame on me, but I loved that dumb old cat....

our cat hated everyone unless she was in heat but when it came to "watchdog" she always let us know if someone was messing around outside

Sounds more like maybe the dog could disappear to a new kinder home in the country and you could use the water cannon on her...or the blow dart....

the worst is I have 5 children..ages 12, 13, 14, 15, & 19...and this girl is pregnant...she was out front screaming at her bf when my kids were out there and she screamed that she'd just have an abortion....She'd scream at him, or her twins at all hours, my kids call her Mrs. Springer

Good Lord help the children and the one on the way.....I know it takes all kinds, but looks like the world would be a better place with fewer of that kind......needs a shaming even more that before. Use her to inspire the kids to be better...at the very least she could have a modicum of value as a bad example.

It has definately been quieter here since she moved out! No more 3 am scream feasts next to my bedroom window...now if only I could get my puppy to sleep through the night! LOL
