I have started to get rid of the grass around our house and replacing it with a garden. Every spring I plan to take out a little more grass. I found this article and couldn't resist posting it - it was a great piece. Do you agree with me that having a house surrounded by lawn is a lot of waste space, time, energy that could be better used? Right now I just have a flower garden but would like to add produce.

Waking From Our Lawn Coma
Melliesue, the less grass the less hassle in my opinion...grin. There are many vegetable plants that are quite attractive, so you may want to incorporate some in your flower beds. I have peppers and tomatoes mixed in with daylilies and agapanthus and onions and garlic growing with my roses....they all seem quite happy. I grow snow peas on trellises behind the verbascum.....
I have always thought that grass looked great on golf courses and playgrounds, but I don't play golf and have been out of school for years.....grin
I'm not so sure that perennial gardens, vegetable gardens, mixed types of garden, wild gardens, etc, are what most folk expect or want, specifically at the front, in a house and property they purchase.
I think most people associate a tree or two, shrubs and grass at the front with the easiest and cheapest maintenance. I think this is especially so when they learn how much maintenance alternative gardens might need so as not to become offensive to neighbours.
I do agree that trying to maintain pristine lawns is undesirable on a number of grounds. Re golf courses: Our area has herbicide spraying restrictions, but the 22 golf courses are exempted. I do also really like the idea of growing vegetables to try to limit, especially childrens', exposure to the commercial spraying of food crops.
