Calla Lily Questions

Mason, OH

I love callas but am having no luck at all or maybe my "care" is wrong. I bought 2 large orange callas at Lowes this spring and a few other smaller ones. They were all in bloom when I bought them, but never got new blooms all summer. Am I wrong in thinking they would bloom throughout the season? They were all repotted (except one of the larger ones) and had beautiful foliage until recently when they got spider mites. I've cut back the foliage and will wait to see what happens when I dig them out of the pots for fall storage. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a bunch of the big white ones and they do not appreciate summer heat--they typically only bloom during the cooler months. I'm not sure if the small ones behave the same or not, plus your climate is a bit different than mine, but I think you still get warm enough in the summer that if the small ones don't like heat either they'd stop blooming (I used to live in Cincinnati but never grew Callas while I was there)

Thanks - that does give me some insight.

in colder zones they are summer bulbs so they will only bloom one time per summer for about a six week period so in the fall I do mine late october dig it out I use the hose to wash all the dirt off so they then let dry for a few days use bulb powder and store in cool place like unfinished basement or cold storage in the spring plant outside when there is no chance of frost make sure to plant the right way so take a good look at the bulb when you take it out of the grown use bone meal when you plant and then fertilize every two weeks till blooms come make sure to water twice per week if there is no rain and you will be rewarded with lots of beautifull blooms and then great foliage for the rest of the season I have lots of them in my garden by the pool since they look so tropical love the foliage and the blooms
