I plan to relocate this azalea after pruning this fall. I need some ideas as to what to plant here. The rhododendron is staying but the rocks (grrr) are history too. I'd like to fill in this entire area with plants/flowers. It has excellent drainage and gets nearly full sun until afternoon.
Any ideas or suggestion are appreciated!
Need ideas please
Lilies, peonies, daylilies, lupine, tall bearded irises, Japanese irises, dahlias...too many to list.
Did you want shrubs or perennials?
Perennials mostly, but some shrubs to have green year round.
Google the "Encore" azaleas. You might like them. I do.
That is an interesting layout of your house. It would be nice to see a "front" view.
I am a little confused--are you pruning the azalea BEFORE you move it? If so, you would be pruning off next year's blooms. I can't see a rhododendron, unless it is planted with the azalea. (?)
A lot depends on personal preference as far as design goes.
BUT
Since your house has a lot of angular design lines you may want to break it up/ soften it by incorporating rounded structures with "weeping" or mounding habits.
Lolly Jean, a nice crepe mrytle your choice of color would look great at the end of the house. The shrubs against the house need to be moved as they to me look like they should be in a place used for bordering the yard not the house. I would replace these with Rhodendron, mabe a red one they are georgious.other suggestions for low ground cover might be ice plant or phylox. Have fun, I'm excited for you.
Beautiful place, just never cared for hedges in front of the house. nice natural flowing shrups and maybe slow growers like holy, euonymus, rodendron mixed with some ice plant or such would really make that place pop. But of course its just what you like and want to look at. Either way just have fun with it.
This house looks like the perfect place for a Japanese style garden....a Japanese cut leaf maple, some boulders, a water feature (nice downhill slope for that)...but that's just me :)
I would go with a modern or Japanese style garden also. That corner would look great with a Japanese Maple.
